Worried that she might have eaten my sock I came home today from work and Nikki had one of my socks in her mouth. Usually I always check to make sure I did not leave anything out before I left, and this is the first time I didn't notice a sock left outside. The fact that she had it in her mouth does not bother me simply because she did not rip it or anything. What has me worried is the fact that the 2nd sock to match the pair is no where to be found. Now either she picked it up and left it somewhere I can't see, the sock was not left outside with the other one, or she ate it. And I'm really hoping its one of the first 2. She has never eaten socks before, she usually just holds them in her mouth, tries to tug with it, or possibly sit and rip it but not swallow, so I don't know why she would start now. Especially because I left her nice and tired after a long walk in the morning as usual, and I left her with her daily kong when I left for work. I think I'm just overreacting because she has not shown any signs of feeling sick after swallowing a sock such as being lethargic, not eating, not going to the bathroom - she seems like her normal self. I guess I'll find out in the morning - if I can get any sleep now that I'm worried about this. If anyone can give me any help, please do.

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Nikki's almost 3, right? If she hasn't shown a propensity to actually swallow stuff before now, I think the odds are in your favor that the sock may be "carefully" hidden somewhere other than her tummy. Things to watch for, just in case: Vomiting, lack of appetite, no stools or newly developed diarrhea, or any discomfort not "normal" for her. We have a member (debbiej) whose dog swallowed a thong and threw it up two weeks later, .....that's a little example of how stuff can just sit in the stomach for a long time. As long as it isn't interfering with normal digestive processes, the dog will seem fine....so if you don't find the sock, keep an eye on her for any signs of distress for a few weeks anyway.Maybe she buried it.. ![]()

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Our mastiff use to do this! OMG talk about give you a heart attack. She'd managed to find the ONE sock I didn't. We had a few white flags in our yard combined with poop! For whatever reason, she passed them thank gods! As the others said, just watch for distress. It ended up being I had to get up earlier every morning to go through our house and make sure hubby did not leave that errant sock anywhere other than the laundry hamper.

| Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Hopefully everything is okay and your can set your mind at ease. It's amazing what they can eat and pass through safely- (WARNING: GROSS INFO AHEAD:) Our one dog managed to get in some trash and eat a tampon once ![]() - something we weren't aware of until she passed it a few days later. How the string and fibers didn't get tangled in her intestines somehow is beyond me but she safely passed it and was fine.Keep us updated on how she's doing! (PS- LOVE the name Nikki- that's our Rottweiler, too! )

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Thank You everyone so far for all of your responses. Everyone is truly a big help. This morning when I woke up, she had so much energy. She was running around the house, trying to play with the ball, and we walked...so it doesn't seem like anything is bothering her at all. Oh also, since I came home yesterday, her stool has come out solid, like normal - and I did not notice anything unusual in it either. I'll still keep an eye on her over the next few days, plus she has her annual check up scheduled for saturday anyways. Hopefully he doesn't notice anything, and hopefully I get a good report about her knee. These little creatures can't speak, but still give you one hell of a scare. Now if only I can find my missing sock!!

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock sorry about this - one more gross story. my dog likes to eat kleenex and q-tips ... one day we were out and she did her business, but was a little distressed - seems that there was something she just couldn't quite get all the way through - it was like a handkerchief or something. I had to actually get down there and pull it out - like scarves from a magician's sleeve! i don't know and don't want to know what it was, but it didn't seem to bother her otherwise. only pet owners know how intimately we get involved with the evacuation process.

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Glad she is feeling well, just keep an eye on her. The golden retriever next to my grandpa started acting weird one day and when she took him to the vet, he puked up a man's tube sock. In the magazine I get from my vet, there was a story titled ",Missing any socks? It might not be your dryer that's eating them." It told a story of a mastiff whose owner had let him have a bucket full of tennis balls in the summer. One day in the winter when he wasn't feeling well they took him to the vet and xray revealed this dog had swallowed 5 balls. It took months for one to make it's way into the intestines and cause a problem. During surgery they extracted not only the balls but several pieces of rawhide and pieces of towels. Here are the warning signs they printed. Diarrhea, Drooling,Lethargy, Persistant vomiting or dry heaves, refusing to eat and restlessness. Here is the list of the most common objects that are swallowed by pets and require surgery to remove, balls, bones, chew toys, corn cobs, hair ties/ribbons, panty hose, rocks, socks, sticks and underwear. He also says to check toys frequently, watch for missing squeakies, stuffing and deterioration from age or rough play. He also says the clothes hamper is a favorite of pets. Hopefully you find your sock soon. Sharon

Re: Worried that she might have eaten my sock Several months ago Izzy ate a two foot length of fleece rope, it was part of a cat toy. I flew into a panic, posted here, and rushed her to the vet's. Two days later she pooped the entire thing out, it was completely intact. It was the most awesome/disgusting thing I've ever seen. But she was fine. Look for all the symptoms posted here, I fed Izzy plenty of high quality wet food.
