getting started with showing

Hey everyone,
It has been ages since I was on here but I have a few new questions. Sharess is 7 now, geez does time fly. I just bought a house and we are thinking about getting a new puppy within the next year or so. This time I want to do everything right. I would really like to get into the confirmation and carting aspects of this wonderful breed. Yes Sharess is fixed and no I don't want to breed her, just clearing that up right away. I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction for starting to find a good breeder that doesn't cut corners with their dogs. I know that there is a show in my town in May, and I was thinking about starting my search for a breeder there. Any other ideas on where I can find good mentors for my future of showing and working these dogs. Should it be a rottie breeder or would any qualified handler be a good start. I feel like such a novice in this area of the breed. Thank you ahead of time.
Edie

You're right on track!! A local show is the perfect place to start! Be sure to buy a catalog (so you'll know the names of the dogs and owners your looking at) and take a chair with you so you'll be comfy for the judging! Sit ringside for the entire judging of the Rottweilers and make notes of what you like and don't like...then, after judging is finished, you can approach people with the dogs that you liked -- introduce yourself (make sure you tell the owner/breeder/handler that you are just beginning your search and that you're open to any suggestions they might have -- compliments about the dog on the end of their leash will also help you break the ice!) and go from there! Depending on the size of the show, you'll probably run into a couple folks that breed, some that just show their own dog(s), and some that are professional handlers...chatting with any of these that have a few moments will hopefully start you off in the right direction!

Best of luck and keep us posted on your search!

Re: getting started with showing

Pertect timing in Wisc to look for a breeder. The Wis circuit is at the start of the showing season. Attend as many shows as you can.

Fondulac, 4-19 & 4-20
Brian Meyer will be the working group judge Sat.
He also will be Best of Show judge Sun. It is a joy to watch Brian in the ring.He was a professional handler for years with the Rottweiler bred. He should pick a very nice Rott.

Green Bay 4-26 & 4-27
Both days the class judges are very good judging Rottweilers

Jefferson (Madison cluster) 5-2 to 5-4

Try to attend as many as you can. You will see some of the nicest Rotts around. Watch,look,listen...

And YES,purchase the catalog, keep notes about the dogs in the ring.

Oh you will have so much fun.

Good luck with your search
