Re: Oprah upcoming show exposing puppy mills

I caught the rerun at 1:00 am. I think she did a darn good job bring the plight of animals to the public! I particular applaud her for going to the Ft. Worth Shelter and talking and showing (sort of) euthanasia on National TV.

Re: Oprah upcoming show exposing puppy mills

I was bawling during the episode, as was my boyfriend (well maybe he wasn't bawling..but I saw a few tears roll down). I think this was fabulous for the country to see; when the time comes for us to get another dog, it will be from the shelter, and it will be a grown dog. Looking into those eyes and knowing there lives will soon be wasted is heart-wrenching.

I wish everyone would be responsible and spay/neuter their pets.

Those puppy mills are atrocious; how can we get them to be shut down??

Re: Oprah upcoming show exposing puppy mills

Well, I went to Oprah's website and followed links to senators and just kept going writing to them. I also asked for something to be done about those "designer pet stores" which claim they get their dogs from local breeders only. Hah! I am actually visiting one today after I drop off supplies to our local rescue. (Hope I don't get into too much trouble!) I did the same to show my disgust with BSL. The laws need to be changed in so many ways.

Ideally, they'd go out of business because the ignorant would stop buying puppies from them. So we'll just have to keep plugging along and letting people know where those pups really come from. I'm not a big Oprah fan, but I can imagine that her show will make a positive impact.

Re: Oprah upcoming show exposing puppy mills

I have long known about the horrors of puppy-mills. Unfortunately, my writing/language skills are not good enough to portray to friends and family the extent of the cruelty. . I am happy there is now video evidence to show people what goes on; some people must see to believe .

Re: Oprah upcoming show exposing puppy mills

I was impressed with the way Oprah presented this show. I was totally unimpressed with the small mundane comments by AKC. Let's face it, AKC must know where all the puppy mills are located as they would get a large amount of litter registration requests from the same people. It just appeared to me like AKC is not promoting the best interest of purebred dogs but instead lining their pockets from the fees they accept from puppy mills.

Next time I get another dog it will be from an animal shelter as I don't show anymore and just do obedience, tracking etc.

Oprah is Oprah! If she wants to take on this cause THANK YOU!! I will take it and be grateful. The more this is put before the public - the more pressure on AKC - the better the possibility of change. Hopefully she will do for puppymills what Michael Vick did for dog fighting - make it in your face!!!!

Unfortunately, some people won't believe something unless someone like Oprah says it's true. I'm glad she did the show, but didn't watch it because there's only so much I can subject myself too. I would like to see her do a follow-up show on what an ethical breeder looks like. The more education given out, the better IMO.

Amen to that ! People don't see anything wrong with Mr. Jones nextdoor breeding his poodle and cocker once a year. After all the cockapoos are SOOO cute .
