Good idea. And you could also ask them if they've seen anyone "hanging out" near your gate...I've had a couple of senior citizen neighbors who don't miss a thing that's going on in the neighborhood.

That this can happen in the good ol' US of A is just so unbelievable on SOOOO many levels....maybe it's just me but it seems like, once someone decides to BREAK INTO your home, anything that happens to him is his own fault...I'm waiting for the criminals to start trying to sue the arresting cop for roughing him up (oh, wait a minute, I think they already do that). Hope the dog took a GOOD chomp out of him.

Rich also had the police come out and evaluate the dog (whether it was well-trained, controllable, or dangerous), and they were so impressed that they called their buddies out for a demonstration of the dog's skills.

Anyway, the point of my long-winded story is, yes, a "Dog On Premises" sign may be better in your state.
This doesn't make any sense!!!!!!!!!! The BURGLAR sued??! He unlawfully entered your property, he has no right to sue!!!!!!! It's one of the craziest stories I've heard.....

Sorry to be off topic, but yes, this happens all the time. There was one case where a burgler fell through a skylight or something like that to break into the house, broke his leg, sued and WON. Ridiculous.

Re: Neighbor ripping down my "DOG ON PREMISES" signs!

So, yes, the police came over last night and I filed a report. I also went around asking my neighbors of they had seen anything. I also threw in there that I called the cops :) You know, word travels fast so hopefully the perpetrator will find out! We are devising a plan this week of what to do. I am p.o.'d!!!!!! LOL We are actually considering a camera. Just trying to research that whole thing right now. I'll let y'all know if anything else comes up.

It may seem silly to some, but to me its just the pure rudeness of it all. I feel so violated! It was just some signs but gosh I'm still mad :)

What a great idea!!! Also if one of the neighbours DID take the sign down I am sure they would look guilty when you explained what had been happening.

That's why you also have liability insurance so that you are covered if someone does injure themselves on your property, even if the entry was unlawful. Stupid i know..

Only in America
That is just crazy... to me, you try to rob someone... you get what you deserve!

Is there any way you can keep an eye on the area where you post the sign? For a while we had an issue with someone flipping our recycling bin that we would leave out at the curb (scattering our trash all over the street). I have a digital camcorder with a fair amount of memory. I setup the camera in the window (disguised it pretty well). It took a few weeks of recording but finally we caught the culprit who ended up being the neighbour from across the streets son. Needless to say, it was priceless when I confronted them with the "evidence."

She was afraid of Lady my shihtzu that only had a few teeth, I told My husband if we got the privacy fence I was going to have someone paint Rottweilers all over the outside of the fence lol, but this old lady can stare evil through you... Its good that you made a police report so they are aware people are coming on your property and damaging things.. Maybe invest in an inexpensive security camera that looks like a light, when I decide on getting a Nanny for my kids for a few days a week Im getting that nanny cam... Yes Im a paranoid person
Yeah I know what you mean about troubles with neighbors hating Rotties =( We've had nothing but trouble since we got our girl with our one set of neighbors - they even went so far as to contact our landlord to try to get them to evict us (even offered to pay 2 mos rent!). And our super good girl Isis ignores them completely, we are very conscious dog owners and never leave her outside to bark, even offered to introduce her to them so they could see how unagressive she is.
But so far, we've manage to win and stay there (our landlords are great)! Haven't had any problems with them ripping down our signs or anything - but that's probably only because they haven't managed to think of that yet =)
SO when we got our wee baby pug a few months ago, I'll just bet they thought it was a Mastiff and were planning on being equally ignorant about it - the little guy did resemble a mastiff puppy or bulldog... My fiancee joked that (while he was a puppy) we should put big signs on our gates saying beware of Rottweiler and Mastiff - maybe then they would move???? lol ;>)
SIGH, yeah probably not!

Re: Neighbor ripping down my "DOG ON PREMISES" signs!

I would get a long stick about 8 ft or so, and use a 2x2 or something, and I would place it in my yard several feet from the fence so it was above the fence, place it so anyone could see it. Then I would place your sign on the top so it would show over the fence but they would have to come inside your fence if they wanted to take it down. With a rottie around, this would be a risky venture. your dog would probably leave it alone and your statement would be made.

I like your attitude, I would be putting up the big sign on my front yard. I have video and alarms system, not for the dog but we have the hottub and dont want anyone coming in the yard. we have "dog on premises" sign because if you put beware of dog you are responsible out here.

We hav our sign attached to the inside of a window, it's hidded by curtains and things on the inside. The only way they can remove it would be to smash the window

I NEVER leave Bucky outside unattended - and I live on a dead-end gravel road with little through traffic.

When he is outside in his fenced in area - so am I.

I like the idea of posting that there is a dog on premises as opposed to "Beware" of dog.

Maybe you could find one of those signs that say "Don't worry about the dog - Beware of Owner"
