Are the puppies wearing colored bits of ribbon around their necks in the pictures? Some breeders identify the pups and keep track of who is who, by colored pieces of wool or ribbon.

Re: color coded puppies

Run as fast and as far as you can from any “breeder” who leaves the choice of your puppy to you. That is one of the signs of an uneducated breeder, one who produces puppies aka backyard breeder.

I do not mean this offensively, but if the level of your question is I found a breeder with 3 Male pups do i just close my eyes and choose one or is there some thing i should look for? I suggest you spend time reading and researching before thinking about adding a Rottie puppy to your life. You will not regret one minute of the time spent learning, researching, and get educated about the breed and what makes COE breeders who they are, but you may certainly regret acquiring your puppy if you do this in haste.

A good place for you to begin your education is by reading the postings in Breeding.

Have the breeder help you pick one. They should know enough about their pups to help you with that. Hopefully you've had more than few conversations with them so that they know exactly what you are looking for and what kind of environment the pup will be living in. Sometimes they'll recommend two different pups that would be good for your situation. If given that, it sort of comes down between the two of what YOU like. Looks, personality, etc.

The breeder is the one that will pick your pup...you should not be picking. They have lived with the pups for7-8 weeks and they know which would fit into your lifestyle the best.

Are you sure this is a COE breeder? You are so anxious to get a puppy...I still worry that you are not taking your time.

Do the sire and dam have titles? do they have ALL health clearances?

Re: color coded puppies

I would run from this seller also. A real COE breeder PICKS the puppy FOR YOU. I also am worried since you asked how to pick a puppy, by closing your eyes!?! Don't you think you need to know their temperaments, how the pup will fit into your lifestyle? I think you are rushing, not taking your time and asking all the right questions. You should not pick the puppy out.

I think you need to do more research since you asked such an elementary question. Even if the breeder gave you two to choose from, you never just pick one.

Re: color coded puppies

One of the reasons they keep the pups identified by colored ribbons is so that they can keep track of health, weight gain, personality development, as the pups grow. I am definately no expert but the Monks of New Skete have a great video about it, it's in our library so maybe you can find it in your library.

Even though Rich and I had both had dogs before (his were Rotti and Dobi), we STILL took a year to save $$$ and educate ourselves, and WOW, it was so worth it. Many things that new posters here are having trouble with, are not a problem for us because we studied about it first. Good luck with your search.

First, you choose a puppy by doing a TON of research on what qualifications the breeder and the parents have...and that is a long list of qualifications. Have you done that yet? What are the qualifications that the breeder and parents have to breed?

And, again I say if that's all you know (and believe that AKC registration means something), you aren't in a position to be buying a Rottie puppy.

You simply don't know enough. You are going to get hosed.

Re: color coded puppies

Just because they are AKC registered, does not mean you will end up with a healthy pup.

Please do more research before you purchase a pup from any breeder. Use this site as a tool to find out what a responsible breeder is and spend a little more with a COE breeder isstead of a BYB. I promise, you won't regret it and you will save money in the long run.

Re: color coded puppies

Well based on what i've read so far ( on this site ) AKC & OFA registration are the 2 most import . I just need the AKC info from the breeder to check with OFA pertaining to any health issues . I've also read to ask for a health guarantee contract , I haven't paid any $$$$ yet . I feel like I'm about to interrogate the breeder :( but at the end of the day , better to be safe than sorry
