Re: color coded puppies

You are absolutely right... There's a thread at the top of either the Breeding or the Puppy forum that shows what the paperwork they should have on the parents (AKC AND OFA) should look like. Don't settle for them telling you the parents were "health tested" -- that usually means that their vet told them the dogs were "OK to breed" which basically means they were standing up, breathing, eating, drinking, etc. Nothing to do with the health certs from OFA that really count. Ask them about registered names of parents... then you can look up their titles, if any, at AKC and their certs at OFA (if any) yourself online.

Re: color coded puppies

If the breeder is a good one - COE - he won't mind being 'interrogated'. In fact, a good breeder would also be questioning you! Sounds like you have found a backyard breeder. He probably has 'nice' dogs, but you could really get burned if all the health tests are not done and availalble. You also want to research the ancestors as well, not just the dam and sire. As others have said, there is a great deal more involved, and the wise rottie owner does his learning before purchasing a pup.

Absolutely!

A good breeder isn't going to think much of someone that doesn't care enough to ask for this information.

Also ask which breed clubs they belong to, and ask which other breed club breeders he or she knows that you should also talk with.

A breeder that's committed to the breed is going to be willing to tell you about other good COE breeders you should talk with. Then they'll probably all talk amongst themselves and steer you toward the best puppy for your home.

This isn't like a real estate agent just trying to close a deal fast. A good COE breeder knows that they are bringing a rottweiler LIFE into this world and is going to want to do everything in their power to match that life up with a really good, well suited home.

That's the sort of person you want to work with. Anyone who's worth buying from WILL NOT take offense at the important questions you are asking about OFA, breed club membership, conformation and working titles, how many other puppies they've bred and how did they turn out...all of that stuff. If they get testy with you, say thank you and good bye and go find a better breeder.

OK. :) There's a good comparison for you then!

It really is like the difference between a very good realtor, and one that's ok with selling a house with a cracked foundation to the first buyer.

Except with breeders, there are lives being brought into the world and placed into homes.

Be sure to post your question list to the forum so we can help add a few for you.

Re: color coded puppies

I am not planning on buy a pup for several more years. I've been a member here for quite a while and have learned so much from the more experienced members. When I am ready to add a pup to my home, it will be here that I research and ask specific questions.

One of the big things that encompasses all the major points in puppy buying is this: be as suspicious of breeders as you are of used car salesmen. There are honest, honorable COE breeders out the just as there are honest salesmen. However, they are the minority. You are all but guaranteed to run into at least one of the less scrupulous when first starting your search.

Glitzy ads in magazines, puppies ready year round, and slick talking all mean NOTHING if there is no concrete paperwork and titles to back up claims.

Re: color coded puppies

A good breeder shouldn't mind being "interrogated" and they will usually "interrogate" you back.

Good luck, it can be an exhausting process.
