For those who are worried about weight...

Hi,
I recently questioned the ADRK about the weight defined in the standard for male Rottweilers. The standard ( FCI/ADRK Standard) states that a male should weight around 50 kg, but also defines a wide range of heights for males ( from small to very large)!! So, I was wondering that it is not logic that a small Rottweiler weights the same as a very large one!
My male Rottie is around 69 cm and 61 Kg and I decided to ask about his weight. Here is the answer ( My original question is under the answer):

Dear Mr. Carquejo,

Thanks for you new e-mail.

You are right the standard allows a quite wide range for the height but gives just one value for the weight of the Rottweiler. So you can only guess what the "right" weight is.

I do not know what the best weight is, but I never heard that a dog was sanctionized because of its weight, except it was really fat or it was under developed.

So if yours is not fat but just big, the weight may be ok.

Best regards

Dr. Manfred Herrmann

Betreff: Rottweiler Weight range

Dear Dr. Manfred Herrmann
Once again here I am with a question for you. I hope you don't mind...
My male Rottweiler is what you may consider to be a 'very big' Rottweiler!
In fact he is slightly over high (69 cm). However, since he is only 1 cm over the standard, you would expect is weight to be only slightly over the
standard as well.... but.... he is 61,5 KG! He is not Fat or very musculous... just big. In conclusion, what I want to ask you this time is: I know the standard says aprox. 50 Kg for the males weight, but what can we
really expect to be the admissible range of weights for the males (the standard has a big variation range in height - small, medium, big and very big)?

Best regards
Paulo Carquejo

Hi Paulo
The breed standard lists a height of 24 to 27 inches but the weight is a proportional thing. The formula for figuring correct proportion is that the ratio of height to length should be 9 to 10.
As long as your dog is not fat he's within the breed standard. If he shows a defined waistline he probably isn't fat. ;) If you're not planing to show your dog just be sure not to let him get fat and enjoy him however big he is. :D

Hi Brandysmom,
I was never worried about Furt's weight, because he is very well proportioned. This was just something about the Standard that was a not transparent and I wanted to see clarified. This was the reason I send the question to the ADRK. My dog was just an example, because what i really wanted was their confirmation that the important thing about weight in Rottweilers is to have 'the right Proportion'.

Bye
Paulo C.

I've never seen weight mentioned in any of the Rottweiler breed standards, either.
