Mother In Law getting new puppy?

Hi I havent been on the boards in awhile but Rocky is now almost 10 months old. My question is my MIL is adopting an 8 week old male Black Lab/Golden Retriever mix on Friday and I was wondering when and how do we interact these two dogs. Rocky does very well in his obedience classes but I want to ensure these two will get along as they will be with each other on our boats, in our houses and on vacations. Only problem I see is Rocky is extremely spoiled and might be jealous when my MIL and FIL show the new pup the attention that Rocky used to recieve. I know Rocky wont be ignored but he has gotten so big and strong, he is about 105lbs and the puppy is still small. Any suggestions on how to make this a win win situation for everyone involved. Thanks Peter

Re: Mother In Law getting new puppy?

Is the new puppy male or female?

I can't see why the dogs won't get along. Both will be socialized, both go to class, both will live in homes where rules are clear and enforced, both will be EXPECTED to be polite, and both will suffer repercussions if they don't, correct?

And if they don't get along, they don't interact.

Hi the new puppy will also be a male. Thanks for your reply. Another question is at what age is it appropriate to introduce them. I know I will wait a few weeks so the new puppy will get acclimated in my mother in laws house. Should we wait until the puppy is 3months old, 4 months, etc.. Thanks Peter

Does your dog have aggression issues towards other dogs? If not, he should be fine interacting with the new puppy.

If he does have dog aggression, be careful when introducing them. You may need a trainer to help out.

Generally, opposite sex dogs are better pals than same sex dogs.

They can meet as soon as both have had their shots and have been given clean bills of health by their vets. There's no reason to wait weeks or months.
