| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? If you live on 3 acres, why don't you look into the price of a 7 strand hi-tensile wire fence with three hot wires. It will cost more than the invisible fence, but less then chain link or board. With proper corner posts and braces, a good charger, good materials, and a little training, hi-tensile with electric is a very good fence and as effective as a traditional fence. Kencove online has a good catalog with a lot of information on electric fencing. You could also fence just a section of your yard with traditional fencing, or it you wanted something mobile or modular you could us those 10x6 or 6x6 kennel pannels. We used to have a place where our dog's fenced area was the 2nd story back deck and stairs, and some of the surrounding area which we enclosed with 10 - 12 of those big kennel pannels. It looked kind of like a lion cage. :) 13 years later we still find lots of uses for those panels. They are the kind of thing you really can get your money's worth out of and you can connect as many together as you want as long as you make sure there's a bit of an angle to each corner to keep them supported. Most home improvement stores sell single panels and the hardware to attach them. Lynda |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? I have Gypsy thats almost 2 and Cash thats 8 months I live on almost 2 acres, one side we have an aggressive golden with an invisible fence, he has broken it (which I think he didnt have his collar on) and attacked my American BUlldog since then the owner put up a barrier fence and all has been fine, I dont have a fence, I have a portable invisible fence which works for Both dogs, but we dont have other animals in my yard very often.. maybe 1x every other year.. I dont let my dogs out side unsupervised.. I dont have the money for a fence I was going to do the privacy but it was too costly, I do have a kennel for both dogs as well, so my answer is Yes I have dogs and no physical fence.. my friends have a real high strung german shorhair pointer, he is a hunting dog they have him on a pully system, its not like a ties out he has alot of room to roam and doesnt get twisted around things, But I would get a fence if I was woried of other animals in my yard, with Cash he doesnt leave my side I have tried to get him to play and he wont..

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? Those small children will still be children for the lifetime of your rott (next ten years) and as THEY grow and start testing THEIR OWN boundaries they may certainly want to come onto your acreage,,,, they or their friends might want to tease your dog or try to get your pup to run off with them, or anything, while you aren't around. Too many dangerous possibilities there..... |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? Our neighbor has two toy breed dogs and an invisible fence. One of the dogs broke through one day and tried to cross the street to get to us as we were walking by. The invisible fence hasn't worked on him since. I wouldn't have it for our labs because they're notorious for breaking through them. After seeing that little guy break it, I would never use one. If you do get a physical fence, bury the bottom few inches if at all possible. It will discourage diggers on both sides. Last edited by lengel; 03-16-2008 at 07:37 PM. Reason: Left out a word. |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? Hi everyone, Thanks for all the input! We value all of your opinions. At this time we're considering either a kennel or rehoming for Zita. We have really fallen for this little girl, she's so very affectionate and already must be with me at all times. We only want to do what's best for everyone, both us and her. We've got a huge decision in front of us, wish us luck. Sincerely, Marie |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? Why rehome her? just because you cant afford a fence doesnt mean you have to rehome her, unless you rescued her and they say so, Kennels for outside can be about $200 if you build it yourself and it can be large, I spent $200 for 500x500 ft plenty of room for the dogs... |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? You can put up sufficient fencing for not a lot of money. Since our dogs are supervised when outside, we put in 4x4 posts (sunk in with concrete) and 5' tall field fencing.. It keeps other dogs out, other's kids out, and our dogs in. We put in enough fencing for just over a 1/4 acre for less than 300.00usd. That is not a high price to pay for peace of mind.

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? No way would I trust an invisible fence, for all the reasons named above. I've talked to way too many people who've had a tragedy due to them. Also, you don't NEED a fence at all if you're willing to take your dog for walks. |

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? I agree with the other posters. Number one, your dog should be inside 90% of the time. Number two, you can allow a well trained dog (even a rott) outside with supervision in an unfenced yard. My rott lives just like this, when we're outside and able to keep her in sight she's with us. If you have to get rid of the dog because you lack a fence, I'm not sure why you got one to begin with.

| Re: Would you have a Rott not fenced? We got this puppy from someone who had to get rid of her immediately. We have had an invisible fence for our other 2 dogs, we certainly thought we had the ideal home for her. But after reading a lot of posts here I was feeling like our situation was not as ideal as was previously thought. We have an invisible fence because we don't want a physical fence. And maybe it's just me here on these posts, but I don't want to have a dog and have to have her in a kennel, to me this is not fair to the dog either. We have to do a lot of thinking here, because when it's inclimate weather, do we want to have to run her out to a kennel? I really don't think so. With our other dogs, we just open the door, they go out to do what's needed and come back in. I don't want to have to be with her at all times, to me it's very unrealistic. I work at home, ideal, but if the phone rings (my job)and the dog needs or wants to go outside, i have to take the incoming call and cannot go outside. It is not acceptable for the client to hear that you are working from your home, it must be a quiet. We didn't realize a Rott was all that diferent from any other breed, we figured if we trained her to the best of our best ability (with professional training), and socialized her we were all set. So no "how sad for the dog" here. If we didn't care, we wouldn't be here asking questions, I think "very lucky dog" to have people that care about it's welfare. Thank you to everyone...........Marie |
