Thumbs down New Type of "Petstore"- ugh

Well, I've been told of a new "Petstore" which is selling puppies nearby. This is an "upscale" petshop carrying all breeds and of course if you want one they don't have on hand, they'll get it for you. The kicker is, they will keep the pup for you for up to 6 mths! This is so they do all the training and then hand the pup over when "older" and "trained"! I cannot believe this is allowed. They also are adament about where their pups come from- you got it- "local BREEDERS"! I know 2 people that have fallen for this. I will be taking a ride up there the first chance I get and will get further information. There is no end to what people will do for money and from what I hear, they are doing a thriving business.

Once again instant gratification. Now not only can you get a dog on a whim, you don't even have to bother with it during the crucial stages. These places and the people who patronize them just make me sick.

As I said in a previous post we have a petland here. Many, many people tried to ban it/get it shut down. Well people are still buying pups from there, health problems and all.

It's really too bad because the ones that suffer are of course the animals.

Thanks, I know what you mean! Yeah, I'll be chasing anybody in there right out the door. There is one girl that I know who got her dog there after I advised not to go to pet store. Heard all about how they use local breeders blah, blah. Last week I heard again about this place from someone who was actually there and looking because he knew someone else who got their dog there. Well, at least I've gotten one person to not get their dog there. Will let you know more after my visit- I could be thrown out on my _____! It would be worth it though.

Oh NO... I hate these places. My sister - who KNOWS better - bought a little Shiba Inu in Virgina from a pet store because the poor thing was cramped into a little cage and couldn't stand up completely. She paid $1000. for this dog - which is white - totally not in the standard and is fighting with skin problems constantly. She says she had to rescue the poor dog. And she only went in for fish food !!!
Good luck Moz - really looking forward to your post after your visit - should be a great read !!

There is a similar "service" in our area, they ship a lot of puppies in the area and lord knows where they come from. They sell popular breeds, mixes and the pom-poo to puggle varietyu of dosg. It's really sad when you see a puppy on their website which has been there for 5-6 months and you KNOW it's not getting 1/2 the attention a dog deserves.

Re: New Type of "Petstore"- ugh

One of the petstores in my area sells puppies "from local breeders"...when I googled the name of one of the breeders, found out from some town meeting notes that he came from PennYam which was referred to as the new Lancaster Co. as (now that they're finally cracking down a bit on puppy mills in PA) the breeders are moving shop to NY. This particular breeder had over 150 adult dogs on his premisis and when asked the life span of his (small breed) dogs had replied 5-7 yrs...but sadly everyone buying these overpriced pups thinks they don't come from puppy mills...so much for truth in advertising.

Instant gratification at its finest obviously.....ugh.....

Jeez I wonder what their refund policy is for this 6 months of training? Wonder what happens when puppy goes home at 6 months and doesn't "perform" as promised......do they refund the purchase price & training.....too silly in my opinion

This is pretty worrying, whats next, puppypoints, buy one get one free?

The sale of dogs in stores is illegal in most of Europe as far as I know.

Re: New Type of "Petstore"- ugh

I really don't understand why it isn't illegal here.

My god there are so many wonderful dogs and pups already available and waiting to go to good homes in more low scale pet stores (they're called shelters).

Unfortunately many people think they need "papers"(even if they are falsified) on a dog to make it worthwhile. While a reputable breeder would never sell to these kinds of people ,these type of places make it far to easy for anyone to get a dog.

As OnyxGold said instant gratification...Ugh. Couple that with our "disposable society" and you've got more and more pets at shelters.

What a sad testament to how we are as a society that these practices are not only allowed put also patronized.

Re: New Type of "Petstore"- ugh

When will the obvious become apparent...these are god's creatures lent to us to care for and watch over their whole life...not possessions. They are a gift to enrich our lives. Not money making schemes...not objects or status symbols.
And not intended to be discarded at will.

moz205, Way to go - keeping one person away from there.

Just a thought, what about a letter to the editor to educate more in your area?
