New puppy

Hello All,

I haven't posted in a while. Some of you may remember me. I now have a soon to be four year old named Diesel. My husband and I have decided to add one more. Andomache Rogue Vom Ulrike won't be home for approximately another two weeks.

Just to give you all a little back ground on Diesel... he has an excellent temperment, and is wonderful with other dogs. He did two years of obedience, and has his CGC. I have three boys and Diesel has always been well behaved around them, and anyone else who comes into my home or he comes in contact with.

I am interested in some insight and tips on how to introduce the new puppy to Diesel. I know that this sight offers an wealth of information and this sight is sole reason that I trained Diesel in obedience for two years and he has his CGC.

Thanks in Advance!

Why are you adding another male? These males will be close in age....you may have problems once the puppy reaches maturity.

You would be far better off to get a female puppy, as male/female combo's make the best match in a household. I'm surprised your breeder did not advise you of this.

Are you prepared to keep the two males seperated in the future, if problems should arise?

Re: New puppy

The puppy is female. When I said we are adding one more, I should have been clearer.

Sorry!
The name sounded like a males name. What call name are you giving her?

You should be fine with the introductions. Probably best if the meet on leash in the backyard...or have her crated and let him sniff at her. Keep meetings to a minimum for the first 2-3 weeks...and then start taking them for short walks together...with a person taking each dog on leash.

Wait till she is bit bigger for playing, and roughhousing.

Good-luck with your puppy.

Re: New puppy

Great! You left an age span. 4 years should work out great.

I held the puppy. My husband had Sable sittling between his knees. He stoked her and spoke with a happy smile anf a lilt in his voice..."Oh, l-o-o-k, Sabsie! A puppy. Isn't she the cutest thing you ever saw?"

She sniffed the puppy up, down and sideways...smiling and good natured. I put the pup down, and Sable sniffed some more and went to sit on the couch.

For two days Sable mulled things over, intensely interested in the pup's activities. Then she got up, picked up a tug toy, and taught her to play tug! She's been her adopted mom ever since!

These dogs have a great deal of respect for each other. May your journey be as sweet.

I would watch closely for play that could escalate beyond what you wish. We didn't have to, but not all dogs are the same. They may need to be given a guideline of what is acceptable and what is not. Good luck!

Re: New puppy

I know when I had introduced my last dog to my (now ex) boyfriend's dog we let them sniff things (towels and toys) with the other dog's scent before they actually came into contact (a week or two in before meeting). Then we introduced them on nutral territory (at the park). They got along great and never had a problem. That might be a good idea.

I would not be taking an 8 week old puppy to the park for meet and greet. Too many chances of parvo or some other disease being around. Backyard is not neuteral area...but at least you know that there are no diseases. Maybe a friends yard?

Re: New puppy

The crate idea for introducing them is a good one, so is letting each dog sniff objects that smell like the other.

You can also have each dog in a separate room and let them sniff under the door.

Re: New puppy

Thank you everyone. Diesel already knows what she smells like. My entire family visits with her on weekends. When we return home, he sniffs us like crazy. We are so excited. I will definately post pics of her when she comes home. I like the idea of having her in hand and sounding excited while introducing her to Diesel.

I had forgotten how wonderful puppy breath smells.

You guys are great!
