Doesn't know what a COE breeder is?

So I've been searching for a puppy for the past few months, and I must admit that the process of locating a breeder is a lot harder than I ever imagined it would be These forums have been an absolute godsend, and I feel that I have learned soooo much here. I have read and re-read so much that some days my eyes are literally bloodshot from staring at the computer screen for so long. I feel as though I am armed with all the right info that I need to find a reputable breeder...thanks to all you knowledgeable folks

Today I went on the AKC website and found the contact name for our local kennel club's breeder referral. I have been searching for breeders through the web and also by using google on dog's names that have been mentioned here, but thought this person may help widen my search. I sent an e-mail asking if she had any info on COE rottweiler breeders. She responded by asking me what a COE rottweiler was? Now I know that I read these forums daily, for the most part, and the term "COE Breeder" is used frequently, but is it a term that is used on these forums and not a "common" term that most people familiar with breeding would know? All my past rotties have been the product of BYB or rescue, and although I feel almost guilty not going the rescue-route, I don't think I can take the heartache of the medical issues that come with a poorly-bred rottie again. I am determined to find a well-bred, healthy rottie this time. I know there are no guarantees, but I would at least like to increase the odds.

Anyway, with all your collective wisdom I guess I am asking if you would consider a referral from someone who asked you what a COE rottie was?

Re: Doesn't know what a COE breeder is?

Hmmm....I would find it odd that any rottweiler breeder of any merit would not know what COE stood for......someone I would certainly avoid!!

In Canada with the Rottweiler Club of Canada if you go onto their website you will actually see that the Code of Ethics for breeders is on the website and the litters being bred and listed on the Breeders page are all litters being bred by members who have physically signed the Code of Ethics. Although I have never researched most american breed clubs, I would imagine that clubs such as the ARC (American Rottweiler Club), MRC (Medallion Rottweiler Club), CRRC (Columbia River Rottweiler Club), and I know I'm probably missing a lot more clubs, all would have Codes of Ethics for their members.

Perhaps actually search for litter listings from the ARC, MRC, etc sites and see if you find anything; or there is a site I found recently....TRC (The Rottweiler Chronical) which has litter listings on it, however I don't know what if any codes of ethics a breeder may be required to sign to have a litter listing on TRC.

Hope this helps

Re: Doesn't know what a COE breeder is?

Maybe she was asking to see how you would describe a rottie who was bred following COE breeding standards. She may determine whether or not to continue to communicate with you based off of what you say, as she wants to make sure you really know what you're talking about!
