Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

Alice's mommy, don't worry! I boarded Gary about a month ago and called to check on him every day and he did just fine. If Gary can do it, so can Arthur!

When Gary hears dogs barking all crazy he gets a bit scared too. Ever since he was a pup he just has never really enjoyed the sound of barking. Gary himself isn't a very vocal guy either, so it is weird for him I think when he hears a lot of exessive barking.

As soon as I picked Gary up from the kennel he was so happy that he peed all over me. What a nice welcome! The people at the place said they loved Gary and he was really a sweet guy. One of the employees even told me that he wants my dog! Uh oh...but really, if you are comfortable with the people taking care of Arthur at this place they will be great with him and Arthur will have a fine time.

Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

What you need to realize is that shortly after you leave the kennel, things quiet down quickly. Dogs will raise hell when someone new walks in, or a new dog comes in, but they settle down quickly, and the routine staff members don't key up the dogs like that. Things stay pretty quiet during normal routine at a boarding kennel. There are noisy dogs, but for the most part, things are more serene than the environment you witnessed.

Your dog will likely get into the routine of the kennel VERY quickly, and will for the most part forget about you until you come back to pick him up if the kennel staff is doing their job right. His worried behavior may have just been your nervous energy travelling down the leash.

I'll be willing to bet your pup doesn't want to leave the place when you come to pick him up.

Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

I think your baby being a little nervous the first time is normal. I bet your baby will be just fine...

When I knew I was going to need to board my Rottie I was the nervous one. I visited the kennels I had selected after phone interviews and first they had to pass my standards...clean not stinky... roomie kennels and exercise area...and enough staffing including a Vet readily available. Then on the day... I allowed plenty of time so I could get him settled in. Let him stiff around outside...meet the people...and...get all cozy on his blankey.

Everything went great...he was happy and they were happy in fact they didn't want to let him go...he's such a people person LOL

Oh yeah I did call everyday the first few days to make sure all was well.

HUH? Must have missed that in my Rottweilers for Dummies book?

It's probably best to not state things as fact that have no truth or basis to them.

The dogs all barked because someone new came into the kennel area...and it is scarey to hear that .

I had a couple of new dogs come to board for March Break...and they had a rough couple of first hours, but now have settled in well.

As long as he has his blankie and his own food....he will feel better.

Phone a couple of times, but don't pester them every day for a report. They are probably busy and would much rather spend their time taking care of your dog, instead of talking on the phone.

Too bad you are so far away. Arthur would have had a blast here.

Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

Update:

Picked up Arthur from the kennels and he was sooooo happy! He came bounding out of the kennel when I opened his door and kind of lowered his body to the ground really close to me, all the while his little stubby tail was moving his entire hind end back and forth like crazy! I don't think he had a great time there, but I know he wasn't mistreated at all. In fact, he was known as "the sweetie".

As soon as I got him home, we immediately went for a walk. We went in one direction and then when we turned back to head home, his nose was on the ground and he started pulling like crazy, following his own scent home! Sure, the walk was horrid, but he sure was eager to get home! lol! I made sure that the kids were all out when I brought him home, giving him time to settle in before they returned.

Going into his crate that night, Arthur was more than happy to quietly chew on his toys while the kids were playing in the living room. He seemed so content to just be surrounded by everyone again.

Thanks again for all of your stories! I still won't look forward to boarding him again any time soon. lol

Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

Glad to hear that Aurthor is home and happy. Its always good to be home and surrounded by loved ones when being separated even for a short amount of time, in the human eyes or in our beloved dog's eyes. :)

Re: Arthur scared at kennels!

I'm glad Arthur did okay; that had to be so hard! I had trouble leaving Nisha with my sister when I left!
