Angry Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

Hello, i registered to the site a couple days ago, but have been researching and learning a tonne about this beautiful breed for quite a while now! I found a great breeder close to my area and was very pleased with the experience. As far as picking out the perfect pup for me, it's been a lot of second guessing. Initially i had my heart set on a male, and through a lot of reading and researching, i found that that a lot of information was telling me, "females are your best bet for a first time rottweiler owner" for several reasons. Then of course i found that it has more to do with the tempermant and personality of the dog, and the way you raise them. I've decided on one of the males, due to his calm personality and he seems to be medium sized compared to the other pups, which i liked.(But I should add that they are still only 4 weeks,is it possible to determine their tempermant and personality at this point?). In the past i adopted a lap/shepard mix who had been hit by a car. He was still a younger guy, and was the happiest and most loving dog i've ever met! So, i do have experience with dogs and training them. Although, not with training puppies. Basically, I noticed there is a lot of answers for me througout the whole forum, but i would appreciate any extra advice!
OH dont forget some Male name suggestions;)haha, thanks.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

Puppies are a lot of hard work but well worth the effort. As far as temperment goes if your breeder is a good one he will have bred the dogs for things like temperment. Have you met the mom and dad? That will give you some indication of what your pup will be like. I got my male from a friend (long story) and he is my first rott. He is a love, but there are some challenging times. That is why getting a trainer is key. He or she will be able to help you with the basics and work with the temperment of your dog.
Good luck and have fun!
Oh and names, too early in the morning for me. Ha.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

The breeder should actually be doing the puppy picking for you. Four weeks is too early to determine the real outcome of temperament. PAT tests are performed on day 49. The results of this test, along with the breeder's observations of the pups during rearing are a pretty good determination of what the resulting adult dog will be. What you put into the pup after receiving him/her will mold that animal into the dog it will be.

If there are two or three very similar pups in the litter, the breeder should give you the choice of those.

Your lifestyle and physical abilities, your experience level, and your desire to reach personal goals with this puppy should all be taken into account when the pup is picked. Also keep in mind, that what you are looking for in a pup, and what is actually in the litter can be two entirely different things... There may or may not be the *RIGHT* pup in any given litter. This is precisely why I have waiting lists, but do not accept deposits. I have a good idea of what the pups are by about 6 weeks, and I confirm things with the PAT test (keeping in mind this test is only one indicator). If I don't have a pup that fits a particular home, I will refer folks to other reputable breeders.

Good luck.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

Thanks everyone for the heads up. Really appreciate it. Oh and Gypsy'sMom i love the name ideas thank you. I actually think from this advice that the one male i was thinkin about will be a really good fit, but now i trust that the breeder should be able pick the best one for me and what i want.I'm gonna post a picture of them just cause, hopefully it works.
Thanks again!

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

This is just from my exerience, but I've found males easier to live with. Even my "alpha" male, who's been known to hesitate when given a command just to push that little bit to see if he can get away with it only takes a "don't even think about it" look to make him comply. Males, for the most part, have seemed more mellow. Females can be more iffy around other dogs, especially other females, but even with other males...I know of several families that have had their female dogs seriously attack their male housemates (to the point where dogs have either had to be rehomed or kept separate)...I don't know of anyone who has two males that fight (although I'm not saying that can't happen..although right now I have three males and they get along fine). Someone explained once (and this made sense to me) that females are more territorial because of their "nesting" instincts. The females I've had seem to bond to me tighter...again, most males seem to have more "good ol'e boy" type personalities...and the females have been more protective. The females have also been sharper at obedience...not sure if they're just smarter or more competitive than males LOL!!
If I were recommending to a novice home which pup to choose, I'd go with a mellow male over a female.
Woops...almost forgot to add my favorite names:
Reno
Yogi
Diesel
Nemo
Jinx
Java

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

I have to agree, 4wks is way too soon to tell what the tempermant will be like. And a reputable breeder will have the mother and possibly the father on site for you to see. As far as gender, I dunno, some people say it's better to have a female and some say its easier to have a male. I have a male pup right now, and he's pushing the boundries as far as listening when a command is given. I had a female, but she wasn't a rotti and completely different in character.

As far as names... depends on what you like, I personally picked my pup's name out of 2 reasons... his first name "Janus" is a roman god's name... and his second half "Train" cause the first time i picked him up he howled like a little train. So pick up a name book, be creative, you can even wait to see what the pup's characteristic is going to be like. A friend of mine has a St. Bernard mix with Mastiff and she called him Tiny-Toes as a joke. So when she asks someone if they want to meet her dog "Tiny-Toes" they think its going to be a small dog, lol. Have fun with your new pup when you get him or her.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

After we finally found our breeder, and waited for the litter..... at 6 weeks old she invited us to come to the kennel for a playdate. It helped her to see us interact with the pups and us to see them. As it happened, one of the pups began to form a bond with my hubby. However, the breeder made no promises, and after they were all 7 weeks old she called to talk about two of the pups, their pluses and minuses regarding our lifestyle. One was heavier-boned, more intense, would require more training and had a hernia, but was also a real sweetie. After all of that was done we did bring home the one that hubby fell in love with at 6 weeks, Mango.

Best wishes !!!

Ooooh names! Love it! I named my pup "Arthur" because I wanted him to seem extremely non-threatening. "Arthur", to me, has always sounded like a sweet, old man's name. :) I didn't think anyone could be afraid of an "Arthur". lol

Have you seen the tv series "King of Queens", the father in law's name is Authur... and he's a pain, lol. But since he's a human, I don't expect your dog to be a pain.

Too funny, that is the exact reason why we named our pup "Gary"! Who could be afraid of a Gary? Plus, dogs usually live up to their names! Because of this I advice the OP not to name your dog anything like Mischief or Killer lol.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

I dunno if Janus is going to live up to his name... It's a God's name... the God that is a protector of gates... and since he's shy, I don't think he'll be guarding the gate much, lol.

Re: Puppy advice & Male name suggestions

My first Rottie was Rommel and he definitely pulled that name off. My guy now is Buddy and whew, thankfully since I now have kids his name relects his personality!
