Sleeping Issues?

Lately when Kane goes to sleep. He run's in his sleep. He cries, barks, growls. Is he having nightmares? Can dogs even have nightmares. When He does this should I wake him up. I normally wake him up and when I do he walks the whole house. He will even look under the beds. Then after he has looked the whole house and checked on us. Then he will lay down and go back to sleep. Anyone have ideals

Re: Sleeping Issues?

hmmm not sure, I haven't dealt with this to the extent you're describing. Both my dogs seem like they have nightmares or dreams. Shelby growls, her lips curl, etc when she sleeps sometimes. Hudson seems like he's chasing something. I don't wake them, it doesn't usually last very long.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

Hello. This is quite common. All of my Rotties over the years have done this. I just assumed they were having a dream like humans do. I think he's searching the house because you woke him up. I'd let mine sleep through it. They usually stop in a couple of minutes at most.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

After being spayed and neutered I have kept my puppies in their crates in my bedroom to watch them from licking their incisions.. They have waked me up a few times because of growling, even barking in a low tone voice during their sleeps. Many times they move their feet and wag their tails. It is a fact that dogs dream just as us in their REM cycle so therefore they can also have nightmares. If this happens only during sleep most likely it is likely a nightmare even though as Shelby states above, I have never heard of it to this extent.. When in doubt, it is always best to have a vet rule out any CNS (central nervous system disorders).

Re: Sleeping Issues?

Thanks to everyone who replied so far. I got thinking after i posted this. Could him doing that have anything to do with his past? He was dumped on the side of the road because he had Hw.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

No need to wake him up. This is quite normal, and most dogs do it in some form or other. I call it "dogmares!" Mine have done everything from running races, whining, baring a tooth or two, to succling mamma's sweet milk complete with the rolled tongue and a satisfied, contented smile! Relax! He's fine. Stop overthinking it.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

Yes, it's just dreaming !!! Just like people !!! People do that all the time, too. If you've ever watched a child sleep or your sweetheart, you know that people laugh, talk, roll around, sing, sit up, or whatever in REM sleep. It's normal, and when you ask people about it the next day, usually they say "just dreams" or don't even remember.

Personally. I always think it's sweet to watch them sleep.

Sometimes at night I hear Gary making this sucking/licking noise. I wasn't sure really what he was trying to do, but now that you mention it maybe he is trying to suckle mother's milk! Ahh those sweet infant-puppyhood memories coming back to him in his sleep!

Re: Sleeping Issues?

This is perfectly normal as far as I know. My cooter does the same thing. He barks, growls and runs his feet like crazy. I never wake him up though. it usually last 10 mins the most. I love to watch mine sleep he is so cute.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

I have a picture of Janus when he was 2 months old. I was staying at a hotel and he kept whining in his crate, so I had him sleep on my stomache, and then I saw the flash go off on the camera, it was my dad taking a picture of him sleeping and he was suckling. The picture shows his tounge curled and everything. Just adorable. I haven't seen him do that since, but he does still have his puppy dreams and his legs twitch and ears flick back and forth, but no vocallization so far.

But my other dog use to have all kinds of dreams, barking, growling, legs twitching, tail wagging. She did this usually when she had an unusually active day or something interesting happened (playing with different dogs, finding scents on trails while hiking). I think it's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. I never woke either of them up, I just let them sleep and watch with a smile on my face.

Re: Sleeping Issues?

Even very young puppies dream. We fostered a pregnant mutt who whelped in our house. The puppies were dreaming when they were only a couple days old. My husband was fascinated. He kept saying things like "They can't be dreaming about chasing rabbits. They don't even know what a rabbit is. What the heck are they dreaming about??"

Re: Sleeping Issues?

Fozzy and Greta do the twitching and running also. It's fun to watch and wonder...is it a rabbit, a squirrel, or maybe a ground hog that they are after... They have caught em all.

Thats funny.
Although I never like to hear my dog whine, yerp or shake to bad. I always seem to wake them up as soon as i can.

The growl is OK.
Now I don't mind watching the lips curl up showing those pretty whites.
Very cute!!!

Re: Sleeping Issues?

I loved watching my babies run and softly bark in their sleep, they always looked like they were after something...
