| Re: What's a good price to pay I think the price you are willing to spend on a dog or puppy is very personal. It is a decision made between you and the breeder/owner. The initial cost is minimal compared to what you will invest in time and money over the following years. Some people sell puppies and dogs for a living - I have no problem with that. You also have breeders thay may breed only every few years and it is to grow up a new generation as other dogs get old. Breeders can charge whatever they want. And if you want the dog bad enough you will pay. :-) Someone mentioned that when you have a good relationship with your breeder you may find there is a puppy available to you at a lower fee. That can be the same for people who are proven in the performance arenas. It's really quite an honor when you have a puppy person return to you years later because they want another of your dogs.

| Re: What's a good price to pay You people are pretty funny ![]() Why do some people buy a new car instead of driving around in their old one ? Could it be they are showing off ? Maybe. Why do some choose to buy a $500,000 house instead of a $100,000 house. As long as the cheaper one keeps you warm and dry and has plenty of room spending big money seems senseless to me but I don't walk around telling people they are crazy for buying a more expensive house. You people have no clue what I'm about. Ive done a lot of crazy things in the past. I have a $30 rescue here at home that I spent over $3000 on for TPLO. I had a awesome rescue I took to Cornell University when he got cancer. Cost me a little over $4000 to keep him with me for two short weeks. Was I trying to impress people spending that money on a hopeless cause ? NO ... I loved that dog. That dog would have given his life for me and I did what I could for him. IF I CAN SPEND THAT KIND OF MONEY ON A RESCUE .... I think that I should be allowed to spend that much on a puppy without hearing all the negatives. I don't buy them and throw them away. I don't rescue them and throw them away. I'm grown with a good job. Daughter finished law school and has a family of her own. I drive a truck that is bought and paid for, live in a modest house. I DON'T SHOW OFF ! My truck isn't new. I live in a very nice neighborhood but I don't have a $500,000 house. I have six Rottweilers, two of them rescues. They ALL eat the same food and they ALL get the same love. Not one of them is treated any better than the next. I enjoy showing my dogs but I'd like to win a little too. It doesn't matter who owns that litter. If I want to compete with a Neubrand dog it is going to cost me. If I call Oliver and buy direct from him it won't be cheaper, it will COST MORE because I'll have shipping involved. The riding coat tails comment really made me laugh. NO PUPPY gold leaf or not will ever be anything without a lot of work on MY PART. If I wanted to ride coat tails I'd just go and buy a titled dog or show winner. IF the puppy ever turns out to be what I hope he would be I will have to make him that way. That isn't riding coat tails at all. If I take my " nice dog " and breed him to my " nice female " so I can compete with something that I have bred then I hear about it in other ways. If I buy something of show quality I'm riding coat tails LOL. Can't win I guess. As far as the revenge comment goes ... MY dog placed in that show, hers didn't. The winning dog in the class was hmmm, just happened to be a Neubrand dog ![]() My dog placed hers didn't and it doesn't matter why. That was my revenge right there. But I did promise myself that day to show up with better dogs in the future. If you are showing dogs or breeding them and you are not trying to BETTER what you have well then it isn't ME who is doing something wrong. As for Skip's comments about why I would even breed my dog. If you really want to know ... Because he is a nice dog I guess. He has proven over and over to be a V rated dog. His father is a " bogus " UCI Champion, a AKC Champion ( Skip Bittner took him out and got a Championship in a month ! ), a youth Sieger, a Sieger, and HIS father was a WORLD CHAMPION ! Thats why I think he has enough to offer the breed. He has some qualities that even his father doesn't have such as nice dark eyes. The one thing he is lacking is toughness but then again a lot of the dogs bred here lack that. Sooooo I just happen to have a beautifull female here bred from working dogs ( Hexental Kennel ) but she is lacking a little in the size department ( she is supposed to be small and agile ) . She is really nice with a perfect temperment. IF I can breed them and bring some of her temperment and beauty into a litter and some of his size and nice qualities I probably wouldn't have to spend $5000 for a nice puppy ![]() ![]() ![]() I think I'm about done with this thread. I'll let it get back to the subject at hand. I want everyone to know that I haven't taken anything personal. It was nice to have a conversation. Just so you know though, my nice puppies will probably sell for around $1500 LOL |

| Re: What's a good price to pay I myself have looked in the paper at the $500,000 houses and say wow thats awesome then I wonder where Im going to come up with the $$ to put furniture in it or the $$ to have a maid clean it, my 3000 sq ft $200,000 is more then enough to keep up with. AS far as dogs my breeder paid over $5000 for her king charles spaniel, that was a secret between her and I, I paid $1000 for cash but my hubby thinks I paid $700, only because that was the limit he wanted to spend.. The woman that does my hair tells me I should have bred GYpsy so I could have gotten my money back that I spent on her, Id rather have spent the money on her then breed her some people like dont get it

I can understand a much wider variance in price on adult, proven dogs...but this is a puppy, and the person volunteered to state the sale price. I just think it's a rediculously high price. Is the puppy being picked out by the breeder for this buyer? To me, so much more is expected from a transaction like this (from both the breeder and the buyer). What have they both previously accomplished in order to give any pup from this litter the best chance? Does the breeder have a lot of experience in picking out a top prospect for the buyer? Bottom line is that it IS her money to spend, but WOW the whole situation seems desperate, and I don't understand how she can possibly consider breeding the dogs she already has that haven't been proven worthy.

| Re: What's a good price to pay Funny ? It is funny that some people only read what they want to read. I have said in AT LEAST one reply that he isn't old enough to test YET. He WILL be tested thouroughly at 24 months. I've also said in at least one reply that if i just wanted to breed him for puppies that he would have already sired a couple of litters but I'm not trying to make " just puppies " or quick cash. I expect him to test pretty well as some of his littermates have been prelimed. He has NO TITLES and as I've stated he is a little soft and wouldn't be a great working dog for the sport of Schutzhund but you can bet that as soon as he passes his health clearances he will be doing something. Weight pulling ! I didn't buy him to work him, I bought him as a pet and to maybe show him. He isn't a perfect dog at all but his faults are not major. His feet turn out a little ... big deal. He is a little dark, again big deal. I don't have to take the word of some guy at the dog park who says " he is a nice dog ". Judges tell me he is a nice dog. People who DO own champions tell me he is a nice dog. When he passes his health clearances then I'll know he is a nice dog and then I WILL decide what to do with him. I know all about rescues and how they become rescues. I know all about people breeding crap quality dogs not even knowing if they can find homes for the pups. All of my bases are covered and I am the one who should be worried about what I'm going to do with my dogs. I don't tell you what to do with your nice dog. I also own a pretty nice female bred from pretty much the same dogs as Shaka . Guess what... her hips are only FAIR and to ME that isn't breedable. Perfectly acceptable to some people though. Don't you worry about me breeding poor quality dogs. Don't think I'd ever breed a dog whos sire dropped dead of a heart problem either. Not that I own one |

| Re: What's a good price to pay Obviously a reference to Shane's sire Maik. I think (and still do) that he was a very great dog. One of the best. Originally I heard he died from a one-in-a-million brain aneurism, then later I heard that a proper necropsy wasn't done, but I think on paper it says he died of of cardio myopathy when he was between 5 and 6 years old. Maik had TWO of the expensive echo cardio tests done at about 2 years old (one in germany before he was bought, and another in the US when he came here to make sure), and they both came out clean. These are supposed to be a great and accurate test. I've kept tabs on quite a few offspring, and have not seen any heart issues. Sometimes dogs die, and IN MY OPINION I've heard that mistakes were made by the vets to really determine the cause, but it was a special concern of mine when I heard he died early. I'm pretty damn thorough in my research, and I haven't seen any issues in any offspring. If Shane's dam was still young enough, I would have GLADLY gotten another pup from the same parents next year...there is still frozen semen being used from Maik for litters from quite a few knowledgable breeders. He really was a great all-around dog, and yes I am strongly considering studding out Shane in the future sometime. His heart is OFA clear (cardiologist), along with everything else. He finished his AD (12 mile run) like it was a walk in the park, and he was the only dog out of 6 (the others were shepherds) that still had plenty of energy left at the end. Shane has been PROVEN to be one of the best, consistently winning work AND show rotts in the US (with great health clearances). AND he passed his BST, not like some that were judged unbreedable for life by an ADRK judge. Not that I own one. USRC rules would not permit a USRC member to breed to Karl.

| Re: What's a good price to pay Maik was an awesome dog and it is really sad that he died young. Even more sad that people would lie about how he died. I know he was tested and found to be clear but that only proves my point that no matter how much testing is done it is never a guarantee that the dog will live a long and healthy life. People put a LOT into all this health testing stuff and they should but it should never be taken as the gospel. We are dealing with mother nature and nothing is a " for sure ". I wish you all the best for continued success with your boy |

| Re: What's a good price to pay I just went through this. -Sigh!- It takes A LOT of time and investigation to find the right pup! In my search, prices ranged from about $600 up to $4000!!! The average is more like $1200ish to 2200ish.. My girl was $1300 and its looking like I got alot for my money (crossing fingers) but Im really only wanting a family dog. Even if you're not interested in showing, it still costs you to get sound health and temperment from a wholesome source.... Good luck, its a rough situation but worth the effort :) |

Not sure why you need to have a puppy shipped? You live in a heavily populated area...and should be able to find a good COE breeder that sells a puppy within driving distance. Even if you do have to drive 6-7 hours each way.Keep looking...I don't think you are looking at the right places yet. Gina

. If the OP has great breeders in driving distance, this would be the better option IMO.

Also the OP has no clue on how to pick a breeder or to buy a puppy...and was ready to do it over the internet. ![]() You have experience and knowledge of these breeders that you are buying from overseas...and most likely have been to some of the kennels in Europe? or at least know of the breeders? Different story. Gina
