Maybe Chow? Could be just a fuzzy purebred. Either way, he's awfully cute! You want pet quality. I see where he'd fit the bill perfectly! Gracious! How can anyone turn a face like that down?

You'd be raising him...and training him...and caring...and loving... and giving him a forever home? Go for it!

Granted, you wouldn't have any assurance of health or lineage on this pup. It's a chance you take. If it helps you feel better, sometimes, dispite all precautions and tests, problems can occur. The thing is, he's cute. You like him. He's afordable for you! You can take him to a vet and have him checked as thoroughly as you can for his age. Then you get him.

Just a question, If you are willing to spend $800 then why not $1000? Not much different you will save in the long run to avoid genetic problems

it's not the $$$ , it's just the principle . I said $800 max because if i bout online for let's say $500 the average shipping i've seen is $300 . Basically $800 is my budget.

I agree! If you want a well bred Rottie pup from a good breeder you will have to often get on a waiting list. While you are waiting, put away $150 - 200. each month...and you will soon have the money saved up for a great pup.

Don't buy a puppy from the newspaper ads, only BYB's put in ads selling pups. You may get a pup for $500-700. for the initial cost, but then end up spending thousands on medical problems in the future. Things like hip dysplasia, allergies, heart problems, immune problems often don't show up till the pup is a bit older. If you line the pockets of a BYB with your money, they are tempted to breed their dog again....this is what shelters and rescues are full of... BYB dogs.

Either save up for a well bred pup, or adopt a rescue....either from a shelter or a Rottweiler rescue.

When you spend the $1200 - $2000 from a COE breeder you are not just purchasing a puppy - you are in essence purchasing a lifetime of support from that breeder. Not only do you know you are getting a quality puppy, you are getting the support and advice you will need for puppy's entire life.

You absolutely can not put a price tag on that.

Re: What's a good price to pay

With Cash his siblings went for $1500 I have a speacial relationship with my breeder and she sold him to me for $1000 and she picked him for me, and he wasnt going to anyone other then me, she decided that, well when it came to naming him it was her "j" liter so his first name after the kennel name had to start with the letter "j" since my husbands name is Jimmy I was going to name him "jimmys cash" lol since it was his Cash that bought him, but his name is von der "kennel name" Johnny Cash

Re: What's a good price to pay

I have a friend who sells puppies from the news paper

Mother and father both V-1 rated dogs with health tests

In his case he likes them close to home where he can see them when he wants to. Very easy for him to do home checks because most people are close by. He also likes to have his buyers close to home so that IF in the future they ever need a hand or boarding to go away for a couple of days he is near.

I just wish some of you would stop making it seem like there is nothing but junk in the news paper and that anyone who puts an ad in the paper is a dirt bag backyard breeder

I'd also like to thank the people who reccomend a rescue. No they don't have health testing done but they are dogs just the same and they need homes. If everyone took the advice of some of you here thousands more would be put to sleep because people would be scared to death to take one.

This subject really bothers me and I'm sorry if my wording isn't the best. Backyard bred dogs are a fact of life and it will never stop. My question is this ... Is it right for the puppies to suffer and end up in a shelter or dead because of an owner who bred them ? There are people willing to give a loving home to one of these back yard bred pups but some people who think they are " all that " scare them away. Sure, there may be health issues down the road but I feel the best you can do is explain that to people and let them decide if they are willing to take the risk. Outright telling people not to buy or rescue just isn't the right thing to do. It's just a tough situation for everyone involved.

It is heartbreaking and sometimes expensive to find out at a year old that your $300 dog is dysplastic, it pretty much sucks. The fact is , there are some $2000 dogs out there with the same problems. Mother nature is involved and there are some things we have no control over tresting or not. Just like people ... two very healthy people can have a handicapped child or autistic child.

I am right now thinking of buying a puppy for $5000 and I sit here and wonder if I'm crazy. If that isn't gambling nothing is. The point is that no matter if you pay $500 or $5000 it is a gamble.

Re: What's a good price to pay

No matter if Gypsy came from a byb that bred for 25 yrs I wouldnt trade her for anything and yes rescue is a great idea and for some older larger dogs are a concern for people with kids.. and they rather raise a puppy

Ya know..maybe I'm just a born doubting Thomas.... I'd like to know the OFA numbers and names of the "mother and father" your friend owns. Also, where in the hell are you buying a puppy for $5000? What are the names of the sire and dam of that litter? Somebody is exaggerating here.

Re: What's a good price to pay

To the OP,
I also live in new jersey and personally know of a few reputable breeders unfortunately we cannot post breeders here and I do have a favorite in nj....but if you google rottweiler breeders in nj "her" name will be there.

She is a breeder, owner, and handler. She trains and shows her own dogs in confirmation and SchH and pays attention first and foremost to temperment!
Her dogs have health clearances and are titled. she loves her dogs and is NOT in it for money....most of the good ones aren't!

good luck.

Well ... my friends dogs are his business but I can assure you they are what I say they are. If we had a little more notice on your show earlier this winter you could have seen 6 or 7 of them up close and personal.

As for my purchase of a pup for that kind of money I am proud to say that the parents are Karl vom Hause Neubrand / Bonny vom Oberfalzenwald 2005 Klub siegerian And yes both parents are nice dogs LOL.

A Karl pup will be everything I need to keep me happy as I think my dogs V-2 and V-3 ratings are about as good as he will ever get. The money is a small issue for me. Having two males under one roof is my big concern at this time. ALL 6 of my dogs live in the house, they are pets. Adding another male may be asking for problems so I'm trying to figure out some sort of kennel set up here at home right now. If I buy him you can be sure you will see him

If you are not in a hurry which you shouldn't be when you buy a dog, then put away some money and save for a good dog from a good breeder. You will be glad you did.

Re: What's a good price to pay

When researching for a great breeder, I took MANY things into consideration. I went to shows, I spoke with breeders, handlers and judges. Two of the handlers had shown her dogs. A number of judges had judged them. I checked for every health cert imaginable. I spoke with the breeder MANY times on the phone, thru e-mail, etc. And she checked ME!

I also checked online! Which, is different than buying from an ad...online. Good grief! If you do all the rest, why not? I found beautiful (US/CAN) dogs bred to standard, with titles fore and aft. I found beautiful WELL titled (GERMAN) imports. I found what I was looking for and have ABSOLUTELY NO regrets!

I would recommend MY breeder to anyone. I have two dogs from her, and would happily return for more in the future. She puts out a great product: BRAINS and BEAUTY, with an alert, intense, and sensible TEMPERAMENT.

Check on line? You betcha! Doing your homework CAN include an online check.

I agree that you can find poor breeders online as well. I found ones who bred "oversized" dogs. I found the notorious "K" breeder...and others like them. There are clues to weed out poor breeders. Employ the brain. Talk with the folks here about what to look for in a breeder. Search the archives. I believe there's a sticky somewhere by Judy W. that would help.

PS: $1000 is not too much to spend for quality. Maybe you could make less expensive travel arrangements. My breeder sent one pup with another buyer so I only had to make 1/2 the trip by car. I'd had back surgery. My other girl we drove ourselves.
