Try "How to Speak Dog" by Stanley Coren. Some very interesting things about dog behavior.

"Natural Dog Care" by Dr Bruce Fogle, good book to start with, gives you a good overview, some tips and easy to read.
"Natural Dog Care" by Celeste Yarnall, this is IMO a very good book, gives you a good insight into nutrition and the natural dog care, the author is against kibble and a significant portion of the book concentrates on barf nutrition.
"Give your dog a bone" by dr Billinghurst, barf book if you are interested in the subject.
"Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson, good overall book, explains how dogs think etc.
My personal suggestion is not to buy books before you read them, if you have acces to the library rent books firt and buy only the once that you like, there is plenty of garbage out there (that's what I do).
Have fun.

An oldie, but goodie : Playtraining Your Dog by Patricia Gail Burnham. Good information, and a very enjoyable read.

I have Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook by James Giffin and Liisa Carlson.

While it certainly doesn't replace vet visits, I find it useful.

Number one book on my list is "Culture Clash' . Think it should be mandatory for any dog buyer or adopter to read.
