2 Male Rotties

Hey everyone, yesterday i found a male rottie roaming the streets by my house, i put him in the yard to keep him safe and went around the neighborhood to see if any one was missing him,no one knows anything. Anyway i own a 5 year old male rottie and a female lab and was wondering if noone shows up for this dog, what do i do, as far as introducing the dogs.Th lost dog is a well behaved, and very trained. any advice would be great as i really dont want to see him go to a shelter.

Re: 2 Male Rotties

do u want to keep him, how are your dogs reacting. you must show that you did put a effort to find its owner and maybe even lodge a police complaint that you found him and keeping him until the owner can ve found so that you will not be accused of stealing him.

Re: 2 Male Rotties

I would love to keep him depending on my dogs reaction, i put the dog in my kitchen last night and had my dogs locked upstairs so they have not met yet, i called the vet and he told me to bring him in and they would get him to a shelter today.like i said before i would hate to send him there, I will make a big effort to locate owners but i was wondering in the mean time how to introduce them, or is it just a bad idea with 2 males.

I would worry about having two males in the house. Sometimes they can get along fine, usually, they do not. Are you prepared to keep them separated if they don't get along? Are you willing to rehome him? While I completely agree with helping out a dog, you have to first think of how this will affect your current dogs.

I did hear that 2 males would be a problem and that was my worry, i just hate to send such a great dog to an uncertain fate, but as you said my dogs must be thought of first. Thanks for the input

Re: 2 Male Rotties

if I could bring in every stray I found I would! I know how you must feel, there was this gorgeous female mastiff that was found by my co-worker who stayed until Animal Control got to her and they temp tested her etc. and man I wanted her so bad! But I have a female rottie (Shelby) who is same sex aggressive and it wouldn't be fair to bring the mastiff home and worry that they might fight. I wouldn't want to keep them separated either, because I thought...what kind of life is that? We wouldn't be able to stay together as a "pack" so I had to decline.

Re: 2 Male Rotties

Post vague ads on Craigslist and PetFinder (i.e., "male dog found in YourCity; call to ID & claim"). Most newspapers allow for free found pet ads. Make those vague as well. Take him to the vet's office to have him scanned for a microchip. Place a found ad at all local vet clinics and shelters.

I would make those conscious efforts to find the owner(s) before I contemplated an introduction to my other dogs, unless you don't have any way to keep them separated until an owner is found (which doesn't seem to be the case).

Good luck.

ETA: You were posting as I was typing! I wonder how an out of state chip is untraceable? That doesn't make sense to me. I regularly deal with pets that are microchipped whose owners don't live in the area, and we are still able to call the microchip company and find the rightful home.

Check petfinder, craigslist & the newpaper, especially if this is someone from out of town's dog.

Go to the AKC website. I'm pretty sure they is a way to find that chip number and see who it belongs to. I've always thought it was a national registry, not a state. You could also contact Home Again and give them the number, they might be able to help. Please contact someone, I know I'd be a wreck is my dog went missing.

When you post those "vague ads", be sure to print a hard copy and keep it, to protect yourself and document your efforts to find the owners. Good luck !!!

Re: 2 Male Rotties

Well thank god "Toby" is home,My vet finally traced the chip to a house 5 blocks from me so i went there and the owner of the house has never owned a dog, so the detective in me called the vet to get the last name, called information spoke to a relative who knows the dog and owner and he gave me an address 1 block from my house and thank god Toby is now home.I have consumed an entire day getting him home and i would do it again but my god the owners could have reacted a little happy.Makes me wonder why people own animals, anyway thank you all for your help and listening to me vent. Happy Holidays

Re: 2 Male Rotties

I'm glad it worked out. I would think if someone went to the trouble of microchipping their dog they would do so for this type of situation. I just don't understand people sometimes.

Re: 2 Male Rotties

One night at work, a good samaritan brought in a rottweiler that she had found roaming the streets. He had a microchip, and I called the owner (it was ~11:30 p.m.). He answered, and I introduced myself and told him that his dog was found wandering the streets. To my surprise and horror, I got chewed a new @$$hole for calling that late. The guy then went on to tell me that he'd be in at some point later in the day (my vet clinic is open at night only), and I told him that I'd have to send the dog to the animal shelter for his county if the owner didn't claim the dog by 8 am. The man told me to go ahead and send him; they were used to seeing the dog there.

I couldn't believe it. What made it worse is that the good sam that brought the dog in showed A LOT of interest in adopting the dog if the owner wasn't found. =(

People don't always understand (or it isn't properly explained by whoever implants the chip) that they have to complete and send in paperwork to register the chip to themselves.
