Re: Beware: Non Owner Dog Walkers

Warlord0...in my opionion your first mistake was taking a dog off leash that does not belong to you. That is a never in my household. Too much liability for EVERYONE!

We do allow this. Our previous yard was not fenced our current yard is. Regardless if our dog is in hot pursuit of a skunk for example I expect them to recall if the sitter commands them to come. I will not trust someone to watch my dogs unless they can elicit the same response to commands as my husband and I. Anyone that watches our dog knows the expectations for execution of commands and if the dogs do not listen as well to that person as they do to me than I don't feel comfortable having that person dog sit. All qualified persons have spent a lot of time with our dogs so they really know their quirks.

Re: Beware: Non Owner Dog Walkers

Wow, the whole situation is crazy!! The only people that walk Nyius are my hubby and me. No one else! Nyius has gotten to know my brother, but I still would not let my brother walk him on his own. The only person other than us that I trust is our neighbor. She is a police officer and has been around dogs all her life. She also has owned pitts and now currently owns a German Shepard who Nyius has playdates with every week. Katie knows how we train Nyius and he actually listens to her. She also trust us with her dogs, but we do not walk each others dogs. When hubby or I walk Nyius there are other dogs that bark at him and stuff, but he just ignores them and goes on his way. I hope your friends dog is okay and that everything works out.

Not that I don't love my family and friends, but no one is allowed to walk my dog but me. I know how she will react around other dogs, happy go lucky and very friendly but I don't trust other dogs, and will not allow her not to socialize with dogs that I do not 100% know.

Re: Beware: Non Owner Dog Walkers

I feel the same way. My husband will walk the dogs and not reinforce any of my obedience training and then wonders why they don't listen to him. I have had some issues with my Rottie growling when he passes strangers and am trying to work with him using behavior modification. He does well for me, but husband comes home and does not understand why he reacts to strangers when he walks him. Duh.

In hindsight I'd probably have to agree. But it is a dog I've walked before and she responds very well to my commands - in fact I'd say better than her owner, who I think is a little too lenient, and she feels can get away with it.

Rest assured it's not going to happen again. I've learned my lesson.

Re: Beware: Non Owner Dog Walkers

Well, Bailey is doing fine. She has been ok with other dogs so far (that she already knew) although there haven't been very many around her since this incident. She's acting quite normal, wanting to jump around, play etc but they are trying to keep her from doing the jumping. She seems to be her normal, happy puppy self getting into trouble which is a good thing. Physical wounds healing nicely and her "lampshade" has come off.
They haven't seen the owner since although I did coming home from work one night. So, he is still around...he was walking his two dogs to the park as I was driving by. My friends will catch up with him sooner or later.

Re: Beware: Non Owner Dog Walkers

[quote=Gunsey'sMom;784190] I dont think I would ever have a so-called dog walker.

So called?? I do that for a living. I'm not a so-called dog walker, I AM a dog walker. I love all my clients, walking them in public and alone, and know just how to keep negative incidents from occurring. I've returned every dog I've ever walked or boarded in excellent condition, stress free and safe from any confrontation. Sorry, that was just a bit insulting.
