Car Sickness

My 7 months old rott hates riding in the car. Whenever I put her in the car shes drools out of control. I heard that it is ok to give your dog some benadryl before a car ride to calm there stomach. Is this ok? Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've already tried giving her a toy to keep her distracted and that dosent work. Please someone help me with this issue.

Re: Car Sickness

My Rina (who is now 1 yr old) gets carsick also. She was the first dog I ever owned that had this problem, so I was baffled as to what to do for her. I started by taking her for short rides and than gradually increasing the distance each time we rode (at first I literally just drove around the block ). She's getting better, in the sense that she hasn't actually vomitted....but she still drools like crazy every time she gets in the van.

Good Luck

Re: Car Sickness

I wouldn't use benadryl. That's for allergic reactions and will make her drowzy.

You can, however give a childs dose of Dramamine (motion sickness) about 1/2 hr before any traveling. I kept a pack of chewables in the car, for a couple of years.

Short upbeat trips help too. Excitedly, ask her is she wants to go to the store, park, or for a drive around the block, etc. Then go, come back quickly! And tell her how much fun she had. "Isn't that great? You went for a RIDE! Did you have fun?" Always end on a positive note.
