Want To get A Rott . Advice please

Hello,
I just lost my rott of 10 yrs. to bone cancer. I would like to adopt another but would like to know the best way to do it before I buy one. I found my rott at the pound but I do not want to get an adult rott and I am frankly tired of going to the shelters hoping for a puppy. It is taking too long. Months now. and I also would like a dog where I know it's history.

How do I find a good breeder when I don't want a show dog? I live in the los angeles area.
Are there questions and other things I should ask &/or get of the breeder before I buy the dog?

Thank you in advance for advice.

follow the link.

While we can't reccommend breeders here on the forum, it is a great place to start. Use the search feature to find out all you wanted to know about finding the right breeder and pup. Be prepared to wait for a pup from a good breeder. Please don't roll the dice with a pup out of the paper. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

Thank you. Yes, I really didn't want to roll the dice, and won't. I have read almost all of the forums here on how to get started, it was a huge help.
I will keep looking for the right puppy.

thank you

Re: Want To get A Rott . Advice please

My advice is a little off to the side of your original request, but I would recommend not ruling out show or agility stuff for your Rott's future. We were in the same boat until we really started researching the good breeders and their pedigree(s).

Once we saw what we were getting, showing and agility seemed more like a responsibility to the breed than anything else!

It doesn't hurt, either that many breeders really appreciate seeing their puppies get titles/awards/etc. Warm fuzzies and good reputations for everybody, Rott included.

I am sorry for the loss of your dog. Distressingly, you have alot of company here at RDN--many of us have lost Rotties to cancer.

It's possible to get a puppy from rescue. My rescue group has an approved list of puppy adopters and when puppies come into the program, they do not get put up on our site. We contact the puppy people.

The GSRC Specialty will be held at the Pomona Fairgrounds on May 24th. It would be an excellent place for you to meet breeders who will have upcoming litters and there will probably also be a table set up for their local rescue group.
