getting a pup in hawaii

I am having trouble locating a breeder in hawaii. is anyone familier with sending pups here? we have a wicked quarentine law and just wondering if anyone has experienced this? some breeders say they are willing to hold the pup with them for an extra fee that way the pup does not sit in a kennel and not get socialized. I hear the soonest I may get the pup would be like 10 months or so???

Re: getting a pup in hawaii

I know this has been a few days, but a friend of mind just got back from Kauai yesterday and she said while she was there she was talking to some people who said that they had changed the quarentine recently. I am not sure if it was just that island or all, but she said that it was 6 months and is now 6 days and it is an at home quarantine (basically you aren't allowed out and about around others dogs or people). I would double check into that, 6 days at home with your new puppy doesn't sound bad at all.

Re: getting a pup in hawaii

As a former resident of Honolulu, I think the current quarantine laws are far from wicked, compared to what they used to be!!

Unfortunately however OP is correct; you would not be able to get a 7-8 week old pup from a Mainland USA breeder under the 5-Day-or-Less Quarantine. The shortened quarantine period really doesn't help someone trying to get a baby puppy to Hawaii; it does on the other hand make it possible for someone like myself to move back with ALL my pets more easily, should the opportunity arise.

Check out the Hawaii Department of Agriculture website for all the current information and forms:

Animal Quarantine Information - Hawaii Department of Agriculture

Just another quick thought: are any UK or Australian breeders possibilities for you to deal with? Imports from other rabies-free zones are not subject to quarantine.

Re: getting a pup in hawaii

thanks for the repiles. I have checked that site and shortly after posting I contacted the quarentine office again. If I can find reputable breeders with nice dogs in the countries listed without rabies, I am more than happy to look into them. A lot of you breeders on the mainland have such nice, robust looking dogs and there are not many dogs like that here in the islands. I myself was thinking about importing a dog with a strong bloodline so we can create a strong line here in Hawaii, but I dont know if Im capable of all the responsibilities to become a breeder. :-( I appreciate your comments !!

Re: getting a pup in hawaii

I don't wish to disappoint you but I seriously doubt any reputable breeder in Australia would send a quality puppy to Hawaii for breeding purposes.

Responsible breeding requires a good knowledge of blood lines, health issues etc., Breeding should not be considered by a novice who has not put in the research and necessary study. It's a lot more complicated than putting a good dog over a good bitch.

Hopefully some of our excellent Australian breeders who are members of this forum will come along and advise you.

I have owned this wonderful breed for 22 years and would never consider breeding dogs. I don't know enough and I don't have what it takes to be a breeder.
