Girl Scouts Helping

I just wanted to let you all know that my co-workers daughter is a girlscout in Yorktown Heights, New York. Her troop has started a drive for their local shelter. They are requesting blankets, food, toys and anything on the list provided by the shelter. I thought this was such a wonderful thing for these little kids to do. There are about 10 of us at work that will be contributing to this wonderful cause. I am now going to look into doing this at my son's school. Hopefully, working collectively we can make a difference. I am also going to look at our local shelter and see if I can donate some time, energy and whatever else I can offer. Although I work 2 jobs, take care of an elderly mother and have a 9 yo, I will try to give even a few hours a week. I would like my son to also be involved but don't think at his age it would be allowed. At least, he will learn a lesson in knowing what I am doing.

Just wondering, what does this have to do with Rottweiler?

Well there are plenty of rottweilers in shelters, that could use some comforts. Most won't get back out.

I think it is a wonderful thing for the "Girls" to do. Getting the children involved is a giant step forward. Learning compassion early becomes a life long commitment to helping animals and humans. I see this as a positive step. Children are after all our future. We need to teach them the right things.

Re: Girl Scouts Helping

harleychick, well, there are so many Rotties in shelters aren't there? We all know that, just take a look and it's pits and Rotties. It's a no brainer how these wonderful dogs end up there. Of course, if you want you could streamline it for the Rottie rescues. This not only benefits all dogs in shelters but Rotties as well. Every little bit helps. I also wanted to let others know what a great cause this was and give them some recognition. I am going to contact a local Rottie rescue to see if they would want donations. So basically, this is what it has to do with Rotties.

Re: Girl Scouts Helping

I lead a girl scout troop and my husband is an assisant scoutmaster for my sons boy scout troop. There is power in numbers! My daughters troop did a service project for the local human society for their service project. When you have a family of scouts and scout leaders who own two rotties it is a great way to open discussion about the breed. My son is a junior volunteer for the local human society(here you have to be 10, have an adult sponsor & go through the training). It coinsides directly with scouting principals...community service ect....my son earns service hour for rank advancement through his volunteer hours at the humane society. Educating youth is a POSITIVE for the breed and animals in general. Children learn a tremedous amount of responsibilty through animals....Tina

Re: Girl Scouts Helping

How wonderful smileygirl! Definitely the more involved, the more accomplishments are made. I will speak with our schools girl scout leader to ask if this can be done here. (We don't have boy scouts and I have a son, sigh) I try to bring our Rottie to school to pick my son up so that maybe some views will be changed. It seems the children are so receptive of Buddy but not the parents or teachers. They just stand in a huddle far away, whisper and yell at their kids not to come over to us. Feel like we have the plague! I don't bring him on school property though so not much can be said to me. I am hoping the more people see him the more they may change their views. I can't wait for baseball season, Buddy will be at every game! I just hope he doesn't try to get in on the game as he loves to play ball with anybody! Hmm, since my hubby sponsers a team, maybe we can order him a uniform too!

OHH, o.k. I just wanted to know? I think it's wonderful what you are doing!! I've in the past donated to my local shelter before. I've even wanted to start a donation program here in my community. Just don't know where to beggin. AS for as rottweiller goes, Ya I've seen a couple of rottweilers in a shelter. And it's sad to see them being put in there. I think that people don't give enough credit to these wonderful breed of rottweilers. Girl and boys scouts, can do a lot for these animals. Especially to promote good leadership and education on animals. Keep up the great work!!!!!

Moz205 - I think it is wonderful of you to give your time to help all of the animals in the shelters. Way to go to the Girl Scouts - great! - if every child is taught to love, respect and care for animals this earth will be a better place for it. If there is compassion for animals hopefully there will be compassion for people as well as these children grow up to be adults.

Re: Girl Scouts Helping

Well, I hope I can make a difference. First step tomorrow to speak with the girl scout leader at school. Second step to visit the local shelter. I hope to be able to bring my 9 yo son even if he can't "work" there at least he can see what happens to animals when irresponsible people own them. My son is very sensitive when it comes to animals and hopefully, I don't come home with any more -right now anyway since Buddy is only 9 mths! LOL, my poor son, he's had to endure car rides around the neighborhood anytime we heard of a lost dog, looking into every yard within a one mile radius! Don't pat me on my back yet, but will let you know how things progress! Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe I'll graduate to fostering sometime down the road!
