| Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff that broke the leash and charged into Kaiser, caught him by the head near his ears and through him into the ground holding into him and shaking for more than 2 minutes, while Kaiser was trying so hard to fight back but in vein! I just kicked and kicked the bullmastiff so hard trying to help Kaiser out while the bully's owner tried to pull her dog away. The whole thing lasted for few minutes but felt like ages to me. Kaiser ended up having a big wound in his head, took him to the vet, where he gave him all the necessary shots and cleaned it and asked me to keep it clean. Now I would like to know, how to best act incase such an incident occurred again? Any input would be greatly appreciated. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff First you make the owner pay your vet bill.... I have had dog attacks against my dogs and when threaten court to have their dog put dog or removed or even confined when outside they paid and put up a crappy fence, which at 5:30 every morning he is out barking at nothing and then my dogs start (grrrrrr) sorry about your boy, I hope he will be ok, Im not sure the laws where you are but I would report it if you have some sort of Animal control

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff I've learned there's not a whole lot you CAN do....You hope to avoid the situation, but if it happens you do everything in your power to save your dog without getting seriously hurt in the process... And I agee...the lady should pay your vet bill. (and buy a stronger leash) I'm glad your dog will be OK...it must have been terrifying. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff Other than keeping a close eye on the environment to try and head off this sort of thing (get a good book about dog body language so that you can learn to spot trouble before it starts), there's really not much you can do in this situation, especially if you don't want to be seriously injured. Breaking up a dog fight takes at least two people who both know what they are doing, and even then, it's very dangerous. And the Bullmastiff's owner should definitely pay your vet bill.

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff Avoid the situation whenever possible. Whenever I'm walking my dog in a new park, I carry a 2-foot long wooden ball bat. Great as a practice "fetch" object, along with several other uses.

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff It takes two people to stop a fight like this. Each of you needs to pick up both back legs of your dog and turn to go in a circle with them. I have read that picking up the back legs puts the dog off balance and they will let go of each other. Going in a circular motion helps keep the owners from getting bit by their own dog. When two dogs are engaged they most likely will not listen to their owners and probably will not even know who has their back legs for a few seconds. It is dangerous to try to intervene in a dog fight but the other alternative is your dog getting seriously injured. I hope this never happens to your dog again. And, after this incident, I hope your dog won't be dog aggressive. I am glad he is going to be okay.

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff I agree with Skip and Carol, prevention is always best versus once an attack is already in progress. Much easier to fend off an oncoming dog with bad intentions if you're armed with a big stick or bb bat to chase it away. My neighborhood is notorious for loose dogs, so I am always aware of this while walking or running with my dog. I'm glad your dog is ok, sucks that that had to happen. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff Thanks for all your responses, the owner of the bulmastiff called 3 times to check on Kiaser and offered to pay all the vet bills . At least that was fair of her.I accepted her offer and told her that she should do whatever it takes to make sure such a thing never happens again! Kaiser is 25 months old Jackdee. Once again thanks to all and God bless |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff I had a similar situation-a HUGE cane corso type dog charged my little Mal pup in the park-the kid had NO control over the dog....luckily I saw it coming and grabbed the other dog by his pinch collar to stop him before he got to Ronin-note...do not attempt to do this, I was not thinking clearly and really could have gotten hurt in the process.... From that point on, I carry mace in my truck and take it with me when I go to the park. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff I have some boneheads in my neighborhood and have had one experience so far with another Rottie and his dopey owner. My guy was 7 mo and his 2 yo, another male. It was a lesson well learned by me, not to listen how friendly their dogs are. I tend to keep my dog far from strange dogs. If I don't feel comfortable, I'm gone, rude or not. rencook, yes it is so dangerous to do what you did as everyone knows, but your instinct is to protect our families right?! I am luckier than others in NYC to have a large yard where he can get all the exercise he wants and playtime with us without worrying about another dog, although I did have another dopey dog owner who would walk her dog along our fence. One day her dog jumped over the fence and into our yard where my older Rottie was free. My dear Rommel just turned away and came straight over to me, probably to get away from such a yappy, annoying dog. This dog was on a leash no less and she just let it go! Since we keep that gate locked and I didn't have the key on me, I had to bring my guy in and go back out to open it. Her dog is like a "circus dog" with his jumping. I am sure if Rommel attacked it, I would be the outcast of the neighborhood. I started putting moth balls along our fence outside to stop the nuisance of people walking their dogs there which has helped dramatically. I also got poison signs from our gardeners. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff Hello, i had the same problem with the dogs on my road when they were pups. I used to take a 1" diameter, 3 feet long stick when i take my big boys out (2 rotties & 1 bullmastiff) soon to be 4 big boys (3 rotties & 1 bull mastiff). The stick is just incase but tobe honest nobody (people run to there houses, dogs hide away) is there when i walk them on the leash. Hows that? |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff sorry about your dog. I am 100 pounds and my dog is 135 so I always walk looking well ahead to see if other dogs are coming. I always make sure there is a way out and I even make the effort to cross the street or turn around and go the opposite way if I see another dog coming. I used to by shy about it but I even shout ahead and ask 'is he okay?' before letting my dog meet the other. Preventing the incident in the first place helps. Once we were walking in the alley and a yappy little dog off leash came charging at us, I had to quickly tie Toro to the nearest fence because there was no way I was going to hold him if he wanted to lunge, and I kicked off the little dog and told it to the owner. Another time I saw a Cane Corso coming and as a prevention I tied Toro to the tree. As the man walked by with his dog, it lunged and he couldn't even control his dog. Everyone on the sidewalk patios glared at him and for once my dog wasn't the 'big bad rottweiler'. |

| Re: Kaiser was attacked by a bullmastiff i agree with the first comment, make that owner pay your vet bill, then get them charged. the other dog owner was in the wrong and its their fault your dog had to go to the vet. i'd be kicking up stink. |
