We've only got three dogs now. I went back and counted our leashes...forgot to include the four leashes in the car - all those are braided, between 18 inches to 3 feet long and varying in width from 1/2 inch to 1 inch

At least 15 leashes here...!! I need more hooks to hang everything up! Off to IKEA to get more of the the cute dog butt hooks - only $2 each! (IKEA | home | For the pets | Pet accessories | Eat & store | BÄSTIS Hook

Re: What kind of leash and collar do you use?

I'm an admitted collar and leash junkie I point my extra spending money to both and it would take me a long time to inventory them - but my favorites are nylon martingale collars and 6' leather leads. We have patriotic combo's, hawaian combo's, autumn leaf combo's, every color (blue, red, green, black, purple, etc.) imaginable combo's....just about the only two leashes and one collar that I will not ever own (except those taken off rescue dogs I transport) are the flexi-lead and the chain lead, and the choke collar. I know others use them with great success - they just aren't on my list

Also for collars we were looking at the again the one used for police dogs; it's thick leather but lined with fleece or some type of soft material and has a small area on the back of the collar where it's also a makeshift handle to grab the rottie quickly.
We have a a thick nylon leash for Gunner that has one of those handles built right in! It is great for working on doggy manners! I love it. We graduated to that from our double webbed nylon leash (it was monster thick). And I hope to get a nice leather one soon.

I would also like a nice leather collar for Gunner- But right now he has a really nice wide nylon collar. Those wide leather collars are agitation collars I believe.

I would also like to get a HS fur saver- I cant find one around in Gunner's size so I will have to order.

Re: What kind of leash and collar do you use?

I have a 6 ft 3/4" wide leather leash and a 28" long 3'4"wide braided leather leash. The six foot is ok for class, but the braided is my leash of choice. The leather lasts a long time, and gets softer with use. I still have the 6 ft leather leash I had made for my lab about 13 yrs ago, athough I don't use it much because it is a little too thin at 3/8". I also have 2 Gripper leashes (they have special rubber stiching so they don't pull out of your hands when wet) in about 25 ft lengths for going in the field. You need to be careful as they will burn your hands if the dog pulls it thru, but they are thick and last a long time and the company will custom make whatever you want.
I have a martingale collar from Lupine-guaranteed for life. And as a pup, she went thru about 10 of them, between her and her big brother chewing on them (no I didn't leave them lying around, but when she had it on!!!) But I only paid for the first one. Also a gentle leader. My vet doesn't like choke collars, but is ok with prong if fitted properly and used correctly.

The "traffic leads" are handy. I have one, but I don't walk her with it. It comes in handy to have on her when trick or treaters or other such visitors come around. I have, and like, a nylon leash that is about 4 feet long but has one of those traffic loops sewn in at the bottom, next to the collar, so Missy can be on a regular leash but I can quickly get a snug hold on her if the environment requires it.

Awesome website link- thanks Gunsey's Mom!

Thanks all for this great feedback....I learned I don't necessarily need just one collar and leash and variety is better!
