dog boots?

Does anyone use dog boots, and if so, do your dogs accept wearing them? I live in an area where the city puts salt and other chemicals all over the roads whenever the TV even mentions the possibility of snow. This stuff is really bad on my dogs' feet and I can't walk them now as they are limping within a couple blocks! I have to take them to a park in the car for their walks, which is not something I want to do every day.

I'm going to check out the dog boots at some local pet supply stores, but can't imagine my brats walking in them!

I've seen them at Pet shops and Agway, but you can always try Welcome to PetEdge - Professional Pet Products & Pet Supplies at Wholesale Prices

Re: dog boots?

Brodie wears boots at my parent's house so as not to scratch their floors. He also wears them when we are over there during the summer and we have him out by the pool because he loves to jump off the diving board, which is textured for grip, and from the side of the pool which is all concrete and it just tears up his pads and wears the nails down to the quick. It didn't take him too long to get used to the boots, but it was definitely a comical scene when they were first put on. Give your dogs a few days inside to get used to wearing the boots.

Even my brother's nutty PugxJRT got used to wearing the boots while at my parent's place. Now it's just part of the drill for them.

Re: dog boots?

We use MuttLuks here and they are great. Bear was not impressed the first time we put them on but he got over it once we were outside - that's all the adjustment time he got!

Re: dog boots?

I posted this before:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We got Ellie the Ruff Wear Grip Trex Booties and it was the funniest thing I have ever seen. We put them on here and she was very unhappy. She walked around like a ballerina and hated the shoes. I got a little worried that she might hurt herself so we took them off after about 5 minutes. the whole time she had them on we were getting looks like "I thought you loved me."

Re: dog boots?

I just ordered a set of NeoPaws for Raelin. I normally would not worry about it, but we have had a lot of ice lately, and there is a tonn of salt everywhere and her front pads are cracking.

I will let you know how they work out next week when they come in.

Re: dog boots?

Finally used ours for the first time this year last night. I wanted to go for a longer walk, and you can tell Vegas was HAPPY to be wearing his neopaws!! I let him run loose in the schoolyard at the end, and I wished I got it on film, he was acting like such a dork, he knew it and didn't care. Running in the boots was weird, but he got a kick out of it, so he tried to run as fast as he could, and fell on his face, and then tried to shrug it off like he meant to by rolling around in the snow, and then he got up and was bounding like a deer, bunny hopping and kicking up his back feet together, and then kept trying to body check me, probably because I was dying of laughter. What a dork.

Oh yeah, they didn't even slip one bit, or fall off even with him running in them in full tilt in deep snow.

Re: dog boots?

Good to know GID. I have heard that the NeoPaws are the best ones on the market, and funny how they cost less than most others too!!

And I did NOT get the pink ones BTW!!

They have PINK ONES now???!! lol

Its a bit tricky getting them on correctly in the beginning, and may slip. I had problems getting Vegas to shift his weight onto the boot I was putting on. I've gotten the hang of it, and they stay put. I was thinking last night "they are SOO worth it, and screw everyone who says Rotts don't need boots" If it werent for the boots, he'd still be stuck inside during this deep freeze. Now we can go for as long as walks as MY BODY can stand all bundled up. I don't think he's bothered by the cold otherwise, just the feet.

Re: dog boots?

Yeah, the colours are new. They have blue, red and pink, as well as the basic black. They also have a "sport" style that is a little more rugged (like the really needed to be) and only cost a few bucks more.

I know that the temp doesn't bother raelin at all. She will stay in the back yard when it is -20 deg C and just run around chasing squirls till her harts content. It is just the salt that cracks her paws, and the ice wuild up that is the problem.

As for me, I just put on a few more layers for the deep cold, and keep on moving.

What size did you get for Vegas? I ordered the M+, her foot is nearly 3" long, and 2 1/4" wide. Now I HAVE to keep up with keeping her nails trimmed! ;-)

Re: dog boots?

His back paws are a L+ and his front paws are an XL. I originally ordered one size, I think all XL, then realized his front paws are bigger than his rears, and they were great at helping me figure out the right size and doing the exchange. I have the high performance ones, but black. THey blend in with his complexion.

Gee, George's feet really hurt him if he has to walk in the snow more than 20 feet. Last winter I was trying to find some nice boots for him. Half way out to the back of our property (on our way to the composter), he'd stop and cry while shifting from one front paw to the other.

So I'd dump the compost and run back to him. Then I'd have to do the big 'pep talk' and get him to run back to the house... like as if he thinks I could carry him!

I didn't find anything I could be sure would stay on. I did buy one pair of something but they just kept falling off so my wallet is a little shy about opening up again.

This winter he has decided it is better to wait up on the deck and just watch me trek out on my own.

I'm still going to look into those boots though... thanks for the tip!

Kind regards,
KimG

Re: dog boots?

I've used muttluks in the past and they worked great. My girl was pretty skeptical at first, but then figured out it was like having 4X4 and got pretty excited.
Haven't tried them on Yogi....getting him used to his coat was bad enough!

Re: dog boots?

I never see responses about using boots in hot weather. I was thinking about buying a pair for summertime. I like taking my dog with me to outdoor events, but the street get so darned hot on summer days that I have seen her lifting her paws. I wonder if these would work well as a heat barrier also.
