| I saw a breeder in my area that looked pretty good and I was considering calling them.. (for research into their ethics ) But I noticed something weird.. I noticed the tails on her more recent pups were very short..the looked like their werent even tails at all..no nubs or anything.... I would post a link But I think that is against the rules..I was pretty sure that tails that small were a no no and I was wondering if I could get some input on this and was wondering how big they were supposed to be.. |

| Re: tails? first question...how old are pups? usually when first done and up till about 8 weeks or so, it looks very short, and then you see a short knub. see the mother's cut. ask if she was done by them too. gives you an idea. the standard calls for a docked tail. 1-1 1/2 vertebrae. some dogs look like there is nothing there and others have a small handle or nub. more important than tail lenght is a breeder being a COE breeder and back it up.

| Re: tails? Thanks for the reply..the pup in question is (in the picture) 7 weeks old. so it may just be what you stated.. I already know that If I do indeed call that I will make a list of important topics to discuss, I do not plan on getting a pup any time in the near future but I may want to look to this breeder in the future and this is why I had asked..I'm finding this a tedious task..thanks. EDIT: is it necessarily a bad thing if the breeder has a pay with paypal option and uses alot of those 'breeder advertising' sites.. I found them from a local clubs page because I don't trust those advertising sites.. I know that you can't really judge a book by it cover but I was just wondering.. | Re: tails? As long as it's not KIMBERTAL you're looking at you just might be OK... DO NOT buy a dog from Kimbertal. I know some have gotten lucky but far too many more that have not been so lucky with their Kimbertal pups...they're nothing more than a high volume slick BYB operation. |

Another concern is that you say the breeder "uses alot of those 'breeder advertising' sites.." Really good breeders typically do not have to advertise as they have their puppies sold before the bitch comes into heat. My kennel club does refer breeders. However, that doesn't mean the "breeder" is any good. All it means is that the person is in good standing with the club. And that means the person pays his or her annual dues and does a couple of things with the club each year. You may be wasting your time in going to visit this "breeder." |

| Re: tails? I was thinking the same thing.. thanks for the reply..When I searched for the site on google to look at the pictures to see what age I had noticed it was on a lot of advertising sites and had wondered whether or not it would be a waste of time..and your post has pretty much reassured me that is..thank you.. |

| Re: tails? In your search, please do not forget to check into rescue operating in your area. There are many nice dogs in rescue. I know this for a fact. Our two personal girls are rescues and one is a terrific dog. She has a couple of titles and certificates and I am planning to put more titles on her. We also foster for our local Rottie rescue group. Pix of our girl, Moxie, tracking with me and hitched up to her cart, and pix of our current foster, Sailor, are in my member gallery. If you decide not to go the rescue route for your dog, you will have learned about rescue and understand its value. And this in itself is important. |

| Re: tails? Budderz, what part of Pennsylvania, I know where I have family the Amish are great puppy mill dealers, signs everywhere on different breeds. I work for a vet and we had a Pomeranian come in from PA. Epherda (sp.) and its not too far from where my family lives. |

| Re: tails? People who breed dogs for the sake of shipping them to pet stores in other states, deplorable conditions, fake paperwork, and the bitch is bred until she's of no use or dies. In breeding, you name it. I'm not saying that the person your looking at is one. I was just amazed at the signs of puppy mills I saw recently, my brother lived in Bowmansville, PA. unfortunately, I was there because his wife and him were seriously injured in an accident in East Earl, he passed away and my sister-in-law is slowly healing from her injuries. I loved the farmland, but I have been a vet tech for 20yrs. and I see alot of the pups are from MO. PA. IA. KS. and it goes on. Careful and asking alot of questions will get you to a good point. |

| Re: tails? oh.. Tahnks for the advice.. I knew what a puppy mill was and what a dealer (/broker?) was but wasnt sure what you meant by that term. I was looking at a good looking doberman breeder I had found in Pennsylvania (not very close sadly) But I woulod really like a rottie so I will keep searching..I just want to find a reliable breeder.. I may not get a puppy now but I was hoping to atleast find a reliable breeder that I can look to in the future.. which is proving a hard task..well thanks everyone who replied and thanks angel bunny for mentioning rescues as I will atleast check into it at the very least. |
