How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

Here is the situation, I work in a machine shop 12 hours a day, 3 to 4 days a week. My live in girlfriend will be out of town next week and is taking 1 dog with and I will be taking the other one to work with me.
Mojo is indoors unless we are out with her so I feel she wouldent be able to handle the cold temps outside in a kennel for 12 hours while I work (correct me if I am wrong). There is a fenced in area I could kennel her safely outside. My boss will let me keep her in the shop near me as long as she is kenneled, but my concern is the constant loud noise she will be exposed to.
Some people wear hearing protection (everyone should in my opinion) including myself. She would be exposed to the noise approx. 4 to 8 hours per night and in my quiet office the rest of my 12 hour shift. She has been to work with me often in the summer and fall so she is very comfortable with short exposure to the noise . I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas on this.
Thanks,
Rob Schmidt, Mojo & Floyd

The noise in a machine shop will be very stressful for her as well as bad for her ears. If there were a quiet office she could be crated in that might work, unless the strange situation bothered her

A better choice, if she is not a tiny baby would be to just crate her at home in the house and spend a lot of time with her when you are home

Re: How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

Are there any doggy daycare type of places in your area? What about hiring a person you trust to come over at lunch and take her for a short walk.

I am sure that there are other alternatives, I would not want to expose my dog to a machine shop environment either.

Re: How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

Are their ANY quiet places in the shop? ANy barrier walls or offices? My BF worked in a car restoration shop when Gunner was young and put his crate up front in the office. Aside from the noise you also want to make sure he wont get in to any danger. THere were lots of chemicals, small dangerous things to ingest (even in the office) and other things to look out for at his shop- I'm sure its the same almost in any kind of industrial setting.

If you do take him to work succesfully though it IS a great oppourtunity for socialization, make sure everyone knows the "rules" of how you want you puppy to be treated and it can be a a wonderful thing!

Re: How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

Thank you all for your input, I have a neighbor letting her out a few times a night. On days when the temps are not too cold she will come with untill the office is empty. She loves being at the shop with me.

Re: How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

Besides the danger of the noise in a machine shop, there is also the danger of flying chips and lubercants. I would be just as concerned about that as the noise.
Constant, prolonged exposure to noise does cause hearing loss. Even if she is not noise sensitive, prolonged exposure to noise and vibration also ups the stress levels in people, so I would think the same for a dog. I would keep her in the office area with a safe chew toy.

I like that you are thinking about her ears and caring so much!
Can you do something to soundproof the area where she will be? There are so many things that can help her ears if you need to have her with you. Egg crates, cork board, heavy moving blankets, even cheap carpet will do. I wouldn't recommend it long term, but it'll do in a pinch and it's better than nothing.

Re: How bad is prolonged noise for dogs?

She stays at home for the most part. She has come with a few times, and most of that time is in my office, its very sound proof in there. as far as chips and coolants, the chips and coolant, they are very well contained and she knows (sometimes with a reminder) to stay back from those areas. Everyone at work knows the rules with Mojo, I made sure everyone was ok with it before I ever brought her. Angie is back now and home life is back to normal now. Thanks for all the input.
