| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? You know, I never thought that Tara would be protective of me. In my mind, she is too easy going, too friendly, too 'gotta get to know as many people as I can so they will pet me!'. I thought that until we were at a friend's house who owns 2 Golden Retrievers, one male and one female. The male (named Sisko) loves to play tug, and he brought me his tug toy and insisted that I play with him. Tara was off doing something at this time. When I took the tug toy that Sisko offered and started to tug, he did his usual VERY menacing growl as he tugged backward. His growl sounds like he really means business! When Tara heard this, she was IMMEDEATELY positioned between us, hackles raised, teeth in full-bare mode, slightly lowered posture with a slightly forward lean, and she was growling back at Sisko as if to say, "you do NOT talk to my daddy like that, and if you continue, there's gonna be trouble!!" Ken (Sisko's owner) got really worried and said, "Troy! Tara's gonna bite Sisko, Tara's gonna bite Sisko!" So I let go of the tug toy, and Sisko ceased his growling, and I went over and pet his head. Tara watched me do this, then she came over and started licking Sisko and then started play bowing, then she grabbed the tug toy and the two of them literally wore themselves out playing tug for the rest of the evening. I said all of that to say this; I never thought that Tara would protect me, but at the first sign that she perceived as a threat to me, she was ready to go into 'protect mode', and I never would have guessed that. One of these days, I'd like to see how she would react if I entered our home with a mask on and went towards Georgia (my wife). I am curious to see what Tara would do, and you can bet that I'll have one hand on the mask, ready to yank it off my face if I think that she's gonna take a taste of me!

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? We've got two males here. One will bark and guard/block the door if unknown persons are at the door - the other one would no sooner open it and invite the people in for a beer just so they'd pet him. He's a mush, a big intimidating looking mush, but not protective!! |

For your own purposes, you are teaching Tara to NOT trust her instincts to protect your wife from a menace because when she did and it was you, she would immediately find out she was wrong to do so!!! |

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? You know I can't really say if Dakota is protective of me or not. I have never really had a situation where she would show this side of her. But I can tell you this, I feel very safe with her by my side even though I am not really sure how she would respond in a dangerous situation. |

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? Well this happened once and My husband wasnt thinking, he thought Chopper was locked up he came in through the garage door that enters my kitchen with his helmet sunglasses and all his motorcycle gear on and I was cooking he grapped me(in a loving way) and choppper grabbed his hand.... Chopper knows now that its him if he has his helmet on since sometimes we are outside when he gets ready to leave on the bike, but I would never want that to happen unless it was truly a threat, my husband has been gone for a week and Chopper has been let out of his crate at night for some reason I feel safer lol even though he sleeps like a log

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? Sam would bark to warn me "someone's here" and then always position himself between me and whoever until I gave him the the're ok. A funny note...my Samson was very close to my husband and if we hugged he would jump up on my back to get me away from "his" Dad. We always laughed about it. In Sam's world it was "all" and only about him when it came to affection, especially from "his" Dad. Last edited by Sam's Mom; 11-11-2006 at 02:06 PM. |

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? I'm sure mine wouldn't protect me, but that's okay because it's my job to protect her. Besides I was born and raised in a state where if someone attacks me I have the right to use deadly force to protect my home and property, so they better be more afraid of what me or my husband will do.

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? I would never have thought Anna was protective. One day we were at Mom's house and Mom was trying to fix her computer speakers. All of a sudden this loud male voice came booming from the computer room. Anna ROARS and charges into the computer room. She knew who and where the males were in the house and that didn't match what she heard so she went to help with the threat. My mom was quite startled but really appreciated the fact that Anna would come to her defense so quickly. This said I will NEVER count on her for any manner of protection of my person or home. I am the human and as such it is my job to protect her. That is what shotguns are for :) JK She will bark if she perceives a threat (rarely) and stand down as soon as I say it is OK.

Bark, bark and stand the ground or bark, nip and chase a person running away??? OR is it, take a full bite on a very threatening and screaming person, running towards you and your dog and will the dog go forward in such a situation, hold the grip/bite, no matter what the bad guy does... kick and hit your dog with a stick/ baseball club etc. It does make a big difference to the dog, the person's attitude and if the intruder/attacker moves forward or backward, is attacking or retreating.... etc. AND who got a surprise.... the dog or the intruder and who is most afraid of whom! PS: It take a bit more than an average pet to do the courage test in SchH. (Even the dogs know what happens and are prepared for the stick.... )

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? Your dogs know when you're afraid of something. I go to the dog park every once in a while and when I go with my two Rotts there is never an issues with dominance or fighting. BUT, when I my wife goes by herself, the ladies end up not running around and always get into fights. They can sense that she is not comfortable with being there and are afraid of other dogs getting close to her. |

| Re: do any of you have a rottie that isn't protective? I believe my boy would protect me if it came to it. We are so close I think for him it would be seconand nature. But in general. When something is not right...He barks and then comes to me. Then we go check it out. Me first. He waits for me to say its ok or not. I think me teaching him to trust me and by not letting him or encouraging (sp)him to be the front guy,in the lead, keeps him very.....mmmmmm safe, nonthreatning to humans/strangers and my big baby. But yep, I am sure of it, hes got my back if I need him. The beauty of having a Rottie hanging out of your open car window...Most people wont mess with ya. I was lost in the city, BAD part of the city 2 in the morn and out of gas. I had to stop. I was in probably the worst place I could have been in and I was noticed...I got out of my truck, rolled all 4 windows all the way down and said "watch me"...Well he does he did, Sticking his entire fat head out every window following me. Erect, alert. Staring at me. Every move I made. EVERYONE backed away from me, my truck and even when I went in to pay. The guy inside said." man, thats a big Rottweiler" I said ya, thats my baby. Then I got the hell out of there! Hate to say it but , I was glad these people stereotyped Rotties !!!! |
