I like that few people know I have dogs, they can see into my yard and my dogs can't see out.

Also, make sure you have your dogs trained to NOT eat anything unless you approve it. I dogs are pretty good. I test them on occasion by having a neighbor toss a steak or two in my yards. The ladies will guard it but not eat it. The pugs are a different story, they will eat it but if the Rotts get to it first they will keep the pugs away.

There are lot's of crazy people in the world and you may find you dog dead simply because it's Rott and somebody else thinks you shouldn't have a dogs like that.
Boy people are cruel! We had a pug once and you are right it ate EVERYTHING in sight! Do your dogs try to "jump" or get out of that invisible fence? I never heard of an invisible fence but thanks, I will check it out. One of our neighbors has 4 dogs that roam the neighborhood. They'r about 1/4 mile away, but they killed our kitten. I had them out one night and I do NOT let my other one out at night! I like my pets inside with me

Wow, you can train a rott to not eat a steak?! That is very impressive!!!! I'm really impressed!

Very interesting and thanks to all. I do want a rottweiler really bad, but without a physical fence, I'm not sure.

I don't believe in invisible fences... the point is other animals can get in and get hurt, you don't want to deal with that.

training your dog not to eat something is easy unless of course it's a pug. Start by putting a bowl of food down, make them wait and then say OK. increase the time before you let them eat it. Then try it with treats, meat, cheese whatever.... in a couple of weeks they won't eat anything unless you say OK or eat or whatever command you choose.

In my line of work I deal with violent criminals, scenes and scemes etc.... if somebody is going to rob you, if they are smart and plan it, they will know that you have a dog and will work to take dog out of the picture usually by poisoning or dognapping them. It's very easy to poison most dogs with food.

I've never left my pug out at night and I don't even leave my cat out at night anymore. Thanks for the insight!!

Re: A Rott-friendly yard.

At the house we live in now we have a decent sized yard, trees, grass, dirt, holes-thanks to Baylee. We are moving in a couple days to a house we recently had built and it does not come with grass in the back yard-not to my understanding-we will not be able to put it in at least for a month. I feel horrible and we live in California and they love it outside, sometimes:). We are also building them a dog run. It will consist of half of the back yard. Four dogs for half, then Nick and I for the other. They will only be in there while we are at work and let out when we get home. Their dog run is very, very large so I don't feel bad for them being locked in there 9 hours a day. I just worry bout the little ones getting out and the big ones getting over. That's why it will be covered. Thank goodness we have an alarm system at our new house. The house we are in now does not and my dogs are my "alarm system". I know that sounds bad but someone tried to break in a couple days ago, myself-a 120lb woman-at home alone while Nick went to the store at 11pm. My first instinct was to let them in and lock ourselves in the bedroom. I cannot wait to get out of there.

The bottom line is this: you can train a rott to do or not do just about anything within the realm of dog-dom, but you have to remember that first, last and always, they are dogs. Can you train a dog to stay in your yard without a fence? Of course...mature dogs do it all the time. Puppies are different, as are adolescents. Before you can train them not to chase a squirrel, they will chase a squirrel...or rabbit...or neighbor's cat. In between-times, it is a matter of due diligence. If hubby doesn't want a fence and you want a rott, then you have to BE the fence until such time that pup becomes dog and, even then, there is nothing that will replace a watchful eye.
When the sun is shining, he's tired from work or play or walk, and his belly's full, there's nowhere my Trouble would rather be than on HIS couch on the front porch. He will happily stay there for hours and hours and hours, never giving it a thought to go anywhere. Even so, if no one is going to be outside, I clip a chain to his collar. Better safe than sorry. No car will hit him, no stranger will be frightened by an over-enthusiastic greeting, no blame will get placed on him for the actions of others. Town or country, fence or no fence, you are the front line of protection for your dog, not the other way around.
