Re: Sleeping in bed

I think it depends on the dog...it's a privilege...not a right.

I have no problem with a dog coming up and snuggling once in awhile...but when it comes time for me to sleep, I want them off my bed and in their own!!

Re: Sleeping in bed

Our Rottie completely lets the Lab up with him. As a matter of fact, the Lab at one point last night came up and layed his head on our Rottie's butt.....and they were sleeping that way. Quite cute. Our new Lab is quite the sweetie. The one that seems cranky....our little white fluff ball.....she growls when the dogs or the cats get to close. She is a cranky sleeper!

Re: Sleeping in bed

Lola is allowed in bed with me but by invitation only, she wasnt allowed at all until after a year. She comes up when I invite her (every night) and she is a snuggler she actually "spoons"

Now Baron (13 weeks) is not allowed up at all, I wonder if he ever will be, he is a piece of work . He seems the type to try and test, he has never been on the bed or on any piece of furniture so far

Re: Sleeping in bed

Our dogs are allowed on the bed. They usually end up on their own beds at some point during the night, but start off on our bed. We don't mind - I think it keeps our heating bill lower because they keep us warm!

Re: Sleeping in bed

HAHA...mine spoons too. I think she needs to feel my body touching her some where, doesn't matter where, in order to sleep good. I am her security blanket I guess, but I love having her in bed with me. No hubby, so i guess that's a good thing right now.

Re: Sleeping in bed

I have to add that Jewell sleeps with us when she wants and even will ask if we mind that she get up on the bed by a quiet bark(how respectful is that?1? lol) .If its not too hot,she may stay in between us or she may sleep at our feet BUT she knows her limits and we have a queen sized bed.Size of the bed does surely make a difference .Now that she is older( almost 9) I have a "doggie step" for her to get up as our bed is quite high off the floor. What a help it is too(vet suggested it of course ).I esp.like the fact I have a warm mate next to me when hubby is away, lol

Re: Sleeping in bed

My girl doesn't get on the bed, unless I say..."up".....otherwise she waits to be asked.
Long as they know who is the alpha, I think it is fine.
Mine prefers to sleep with my 2 daughters lately, in their room, at the doorway of their room, she just started that recenlty on her own.

Re: Sleeping in bed

Before my daughters(twins) both headed off to college,Jewell would also sleep in their room for a little bit but then end up in our room. After my girls left, she would go to my girls room and I would hear whining and go there to find her laying on the floor, missing them too...I've got the empty nest syndrome and so did Jewell .How excited she gets when they come home!!!

Re: Sleeping in bed

When we added "Max" to our menagerie my husband asked if we would now have to get a king sized bed. Max is a Rott/Lab mix and already more than 30 pounds at 14 weeks. Molly, our 45 lb lab/?? mix sleeps with us now (by invitation only) and of course we are joined during each night by one or both of our cats. All generally prefer the foot of the bed but Molly will sneak up and between us if it is cold or there is a thunderstorm and one of the cats likes to give me a "wake up call" by nibbling on my ear or licking my face when she thinks its time to rise. I am thinking that Max will enjoy a place of honor in a nice bed on the floor of our bedroom!

Re: Sleeping in bed

Tavi sleeps with me on by invitation only... otherwise she sleeps on the sofa in my room. She's a snuggler, has to have her back as close up against mine as she can scoot.

Re: Sleeping in bed

Our chihuahua Jewel sleeps in the bed with us, mostly because since she has become so old and for lack of a nicer word decrepit, she will not sleep well alone and keeps us up all night. She is blind, mostly deaf and beyond retraining, and is fine in her pen in the day, but at night it's just easier for us to let her sleep in bed. Of course we had to make special arrangements so she can't accidently fall out if she wakes up before me, but thats another story...

Our huge rottie however only comes in the bed for a treat by invitation, and never the entire night. Not because he is disrespectful or anything, simply because he is huge, a bed hog, and farts. And I'd like to keep my husband and dog and this way keeps everyone happy:) Payton has a blankie on the floor right beside us and likes it just fine, and when he comes up for cuddles he really enjoys it and see's it as a treat. He's the same about the couch - invitation only. He's super good about always waiting till asked:)

We wouldn't have room for the rottie anyways, cause our cats who are not trainable also all sleep on the bed, and they don't move out of the way no matty how many times they are disturbed.

Re: Sleeping in bed

Alright where to begin...Hemi sleeps outside most nights. Mostly because he is quite cat like and does what he pleases, if he does come inside he sleeps in the laundry room on the dirty clothes thats his favorite spot. Pocho sleeps in the bed with us. Always have and always will. She comes up univited BUT she is a huge cuddle bug and has to be right next to me this goes with the couch also where ever I am at she is at. Sometimes during the night if she gets to hot she will lay at the end of the bed, but the second my hubby goes to work she is on his pillow licking my eye. ( I have no idea she loves to lick my eye) Duke the Rot loves to cuddle in bed but he also farts alot, sometimes to the point where he has to sleep in his kennel in the kitchen. He only comes onto the bed when invited OR when he has the zoomies they all race from the bed to the couch as fast as they can on and off and on and off. Duke has his own spot on our large couch so he lays there univited or on the floor. Cuda the puppy on the other hand just jumps up onto all the furniture and tries to get in your lap we are working on that. She never sleeps on the bed when there are people in it she just gets too hot, but if she is tired she wil go lay on the bed alone. None of my dogs have a problem getting off of the furniture when told, although I do get that Do I have to mom? face sometimes. Melonie

He jumped up to turn around so see what was the deal...another dog in his mom's room..."I THINK NOT" and..............stuck his toe nail in my eye. We are talking my EYEBALL...bleeding....yikes. Off to the hospital. Anyway I was fine after a couple weeks. But....No more in the bed for my guy even though it was not his fault...just protecting Mom. From that day forward he slept on his bed next to my bed and was very happy with that arrangement.
That same exact thing happened to me!!!! 70% of my cornea scratched off..(It healed fine)..I tried the own bed thing...but found I slept better with Wolfgang with me..

Re: Sleeping in bed

Arwen was on the bed ONCE when she was maybe 10 weeks old (Eric and I took a nap, and I couldnt leave her on the floor alone ) and for the second time (she is 20mths) yesterday. While on vacation my father found out if he fell asleep with her uncrated he would wake up with her on our bed. We were in the bedroom after we got back from vacation putting away laundry, and she just jumped up on the bed out of nowhere. We made her get down but later I invited her up, and she proceded to lay down, and almost twitch with excitment. She was finally told off because she was to excited to cuddle and sleep. One step at a time. (we're not looking to let her SLEEP with us, but maybe 10-15 mins of cuddle time on the bed before bedtime)

(She was also allowed on the couch for the first time by invitation before we left for vacation, she doesn't however understand how to get up there in a cuddle position without falling off yet )
