Re: when is best to get another rotty

I'm not being rude, but at 4mos, a dog is not YET "well trained." That would be like calling a 3yr old child "mature and well behaved." You still have a lot of time yet to go before the dog is truly settled and well trained. 4mos old pups are generally very compliant. Often by 6mos, that changes to some degree, and then around 1yr, you hit the "teens."

Most people, including myself, recommend that you wait until 2yrs of age before adding another dog. If you have any doubts, read any of the threads about "raising two puppies."

Re: when is best to get another rotty

I waited until my girl was 4 to bring another pup into the house-just enjoy your pup and work hard at training him. Aveda-at 4-is almost "well trained":)-training for me is a 24/7 experience-and it never stops. Also, with a 4 month old puppy, you have a LONG time to go before he is even trained-you haven't even had the terrible teenage years!

Re: when is best to get another rotty

My George was so good at 4 months too ,we had a trainer coming to our house.Everything was great...Now he's 6 month and he's good 90% of the time ,but that 10%...he tests me every day to see how far he can take it....1 Hour in every day he acts like he has had NO training ( we call this his Devil time ...LOL )...we just work harder in that hour with his training...

I'm going to wait till he's 2 years old before I get another puppy

Re: when is best to get another rotty

Is your puppy a male? Males typically mature mentally and physically around 3 years old. My suggestion is that you hold off acquiring another Rottie puppy until your dog much older. It is difficult to do a good job training and socializing two Rotties, never mind two. You may think your puppy is "well trained," but you will not feel so sanguine in a few months!

I will second what BostonRott said. My dog was "well trained" also at 4 months. He just turned 1 year old and he is hell on wheels. Wait on the new pup.
