Re: Akc

AKC is the American Kennel Club.

You can get a lot of information on their website at American Kennel Club - akc.org

Their primary purpose is registration of dogs who are among the hundreds of breeds of dogs which are "recognized" by the AKC. Not every breed of dog in the world is so recognized. As part of that breed recognition and recognition process, they develop the breed standards for each of those breeds by which dogs of each breed are judged at AKC shows.

I'm sure there are others here who will tell you more.

Re: Akc

Thank you; so it sounds like they are an organization that provides a standard to the industry (for lack of a better term). Is the American Rott Club associated with AKC to provide a standard of operatio specifically to Rott owner?

Re: Akc

registrations. think of it as your puppy's birth certificate.
ever want to show? maybe mingle in agility, obedience, herding or rally?
akc registration is needed(or ilp, if you have a purebred with no papers).
proof of ownership. apart from akc registration being a birth certificate, it's your pups owner registration papers.
to do your pups' hip ofa or health tests so it can be documented in the ofa site for the breeder and researchers sake.
will you ever breed? papers are needed to register offspring.
just a pet? you never know if one day you want to get involved in an akc sponsored activity with your pet.
like previously mentioned, visit their website and see all that akc registers and support.

Re: Akc

I'm not sure what you mean by "standards of operation" for Rott owners. The breed standards that AKC establishes deal with physical attributes and qualities and the desired attitude of a particular breed of dog to be demonstrated in the show ring. It doesn't go beyond that as an industry standard (again, for lack of a better word!).

Those who are breeders here and more familiar with the ARC can tell you more about Code of Ethics (COE) breeders and other concepts that the AKC, ARC or both are concerned with.

Re: Akc

the american rottweiler club is a member club to akc. they are the parent club of our breed. the arc submits the standard and the akc approves the standard of the breed and maintains it.
the arc is a code of ethics club, so are many other specialty clubs, which means they have a strict code to follow regarding the sale, breeding, advertising and upkeep of our breed.
the akc holds and establishes the rules for showing in all akc events, approves shows, record keeps results, pedigrees, and offers many other services that can be seen in their webpage.

Re: Akc

The AKC does not develop the breed standards, the national breed club for each breed develops the standard which is then submitted to and approved by AKC. AKC maintains the breeding records for each breed and makes sure pedigrees are accurate. They also maintain the rules for various dog titles, champion, companion dog, companion dog excellent, and a multitude of other titles, some breed specific.

Re: Akc

"AKC" papers or "AKC parents" or "AKC" anything doesn't mean a thing. "AKC" isn't a guarantee of quality, either in a puppy or in the puppy's parents.

The AKC is a registry, just at the DMV is a registry. You can as easily register your beater of a car as you can the brand new model you just drove out of the showroom. Same with the AKC. A COE breeder who puts time, thought, money, and his or her heart and soul into puppies he or she breeds can just as easily register that litter with the AKC as can the miller.
