Re: Boarding My Puppy

Any chance you could find a hotel/motel near your folks that would allow you to stay with your dog - at least until she is a little older or until you can make other arrangements that you are more comfortable with? I personally would be a little afraid to leave a young pup in a kennel at such an impressionable age.

Out of curiousity, is there a reason your parents won't let you bring your puppy?

This makes sense, too. A motel is a good option, especially if she is crate trained.

And, I'm also curious --if she is crate trained, just exactly what is your parents' objection to having her in the house? (If you knew that when you got her, and knew that you would be going to visit this often, it might not have been the best idea to get a puppy at this time, but you did, and here you are, and you need to find a solution that works). Lots of ideas given to you here.

Thank you for all of your great advice and support. My Mom has stage 4 recurrent cancer and has been told she probably won't live to the end of this year. We have been waiting for a pup for several months and now Roxie is here. My Mom and Dad have told us that they don't want any animals in their house and we have always respected their wishes. We have always had cats and it has never been a problem. We have stayed in motel/hotels with the cats before because they can be left for a whole day and be fine. Can't do that with a puppy or a dog.

But the serious issue for not bringing Roxie down there is because when we told my Dad we were thinking of getting a Rottweiler he was furious. He told me that if I did he would come up to my house and kill it! My Mom has cancer and can't drive. My Dad has diabetes and is going blind in both eyes. So I don't have to worry about either of them coming to my house to harm Roxie or anything else. We live 5 hours apart from each other.

So I either have to find a place for Roxie to stay or I don't go see my parents. It's that simple. I just can't put Roxie in one of those scary places when she is so young. I have called some other doggy day care places and will go visit them this weekend. I just think she is too young.

I appreciate the opinions and advice from everyone!
Thanks,
RoxiesMama

Re: Boarding My Puppy

Roxiesmama,
I have a close family member who is in the same situation as your mom, and we too want to spend as much time with him as we can. It's stressful enough without having the added problem of finding appropriate care for the puppy, my heart goes out to you. :-(

I did have another thought and if it's totally out in left field, forgive me and chaulk up to the heat.

If you have a really good rott rescue in your area they may be able to help out in some way. I have discovered through reading the forums here that rott rescue people are the most resourseful (sorry about the spelling) and compassionate humans on the planet who deserve a special place in heaven.

Another thought is to look for a boarding spot where your parents live. But the vaccination issue is still there for a kennel.

I know you need to have something stable because when you're visiting with your folks you don't want to be destracted by worry over the pup.
best wishes
Niki

Re: Boarding My Puppy

I understand your situation now....I'm sorry you are dealing with all this. Having someone take care of her at your home or theirs seems like the best solution. A rescue might be a place with contacts for things like that, or vet's offices, or even pet or feed stores in your area, might know people who could help you.

Re: Boarding My Puppy

With it being a 48 hour stay every 2 to three weeks I would think a close friend, pet sitting, or doggy daycare would be the best idea. For an older puppy (over a year) that amount of time would not be to bad even at a vet/boarding facility. I am so sorry about your parents failing health, and understand your respecting your parents wishes to not bring an animal into their home.

Good luck contacting doggy daycares this week, I know this sounds kind of weird, but what about kids who baby sit? Maybe a 12 or 13 year old who wants to earn a few extra bucks, will socialize your puppy and play with it, and it can sleep in it's crate in their bedroom. Maybe a child who wants to prove to their own parents they can handle a dog of their own someday, and as a puppy they wouldn't have any problem controlling it while on a leash/walk. Just a thought.

We have two cats here and she has had no interest in them so far and they just keep their distance from her! Thanks for the idea.

If you dont mind me asking, where did you take her? My bosses run a boarding kennel....There are some pretty nice ones around!

Re: Boarding My Puppy

When I leave I get someone to come stay at my house with my dogs. The best candidates are young adults (16 - 25 yrs) who still live at home. They welcome having a weekend to themselves. The key is finding trustworthy ones. Its worked great for me.

Re: Boarding My Puppy

Sorry to hear about your parents health, particularly your mom. I know first hand how difficult and heartwrenching these things can be for families. Wow. Wouldn't it be great if Daisy Duke was close enough for you?

A vet facility should know what steps to take to keep one dog being treated for parvo from infecting other. Sick dogs and kennel dogs are usually separate parts of the facility. And both areas have cleaning regimins.

Ecburt, I can not speak to your sister's situation. But I would feel safer at a vet facility than almost any other except home care.

I would suggest medicating for kennel cough, if age appropriate. Most dogs adapt better than you think to the day to day routine of boarding.

Remember their demeanor to some extent feeds off you. If your apprehensive and worried picking her up? That's how she'll be. Excited and happy to see her again? She can do that too.

Daisy Duke, what a kind and selfless offer! Wow! I really am impressed and appreciate your kindness! Farmington is the opposite direction we'll be headed though. My parents live in the most upper northwest corner of Iowa and we go through Hutchinson, New Ulm, and Windom to get down there. But you impressed my husband and I both-thank you for your offer!

I'm still checking things in my area and trying to see if we have anyone if my neighborhood that would be interested in taking her for a weekend-since she's not potty trained no one wants to take her into their house. I understand that as we've had a few accidents!!! I will be seeing a couple more "doggy day care" places this weekend.

Thanks,
RoxiesMama

I'd rather not name the place, but I can tell you that it wasn't "Siver Dog" but it is in Buffalo, MN. I've emailed a few places this week so we could go visit them this weekend and not one place and emailed or called me back. So maybe I just show up at these places and take a look/see anyway...........

Wink Re: Boarding My Puppy

Roxiesmama,

Have you checked into the possibility of a "petsitter" coming to your house a few times a day to let the pup out and feed him? I just did that with a woman who advertised in the area and it ran me about $160.00 for 6 days. She came to my house three times a day and stayed for about 1 hr per visit? Didnt know if you had that option in your area.
