Doggie Elbow Corns?

What are those little rough areas on my dog's elbow area? Its almost like a little callus. It is an area the size of a pencil eraser, but he has developed it recently. Is is from laying on hard surfaces? Is it painful to my dog? Should I put bag Balm or some other kind of medicated balm on it or would that be more likely to irritate it than help it?

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

I just noticed this on Arwen a couple weeks ago. She has one of each elbow but hers are narrow but about an inch long. The look like dry flakey skin but the hair around it still kind of covers it so it's hard to see. I tried some anti inch stuff because she had a small spot on her front leg she had been chewing and it got rid of that but these are more just dry patches. I am thinking maybe some non fragrence baby lotion a couple times a day would be good. I figure its from sleeping on her plastic crate pan, she chews any pad/blanket we give her.

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

My girl had them once, after a few days stay at the vet's boarding kennel. Hard surfaces (concrete in this case) were the culprit. They went away on their own after about a week at home, and no surface harder than the floor.

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

So you think it is the hard surface? WE have been thinking about giving him a littl fleecey thing in his crate. something pretty cheap to see how well he does with it. I am pleased with the way he has done with his doggy bed from Cosco-he has not tried to kill it at all-he likes it, lol. So do you think that would be a way to get rid of them? I just dont want him to be uncomfortable-I dont know if he can feel them or not.

They are little right now, but I have seen dogs with real big ones-and I dont want that!

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

They are most likely from hard surfaces. Try a small pumice stone that is designed to smooth the callouses on human feet, then apply a small amount of a softening agent, like Bag Balm. I'd also go ahead and invest in a soft blanket.

I hope he's not like Serena. Everytype of blanket or bedding we put in her crate she pushes away in to a pile and prefers the hard surface.

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

My boy has them (they are only the size of a quarter). He also had big Hygromas (size of a tennis ball- they went away). He chooses to lie on the tile floor 99% of the time (despite the fact that he is allowed on the couch). It is cooler on the tile. I was told the callous' are normal and are just there because he needs them.

Oh, and I forgot....the vet said they are just like a callous on our hands (they dont hurt the dog at all).

Kahlua has the same things on her elbows. I assumed they were from the way she slides her front legs across the floor when she lays down. The vet said they were normal and nothing to worry about.

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

I'm sure they don't hurt. At least unless they get dry and cracked or abraised or something.

Still, I was more than happy to have them go away again. I was showing her, at the time it happened. And I thought they were an ugly inconvenience. Tho I'm sure judges don't care.

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

my puppy has two pencil-eraser type "warts" on his rear left ankle. the vet told me they were benign and cosmetic (making me feel vain for WANTING THEN GONE). anyway, they said unless we decide to spay him (when they could put him under a general), i should not do anything.
still hate 'em

Re: Doggie Elbow Corns?

Oscar has just recently formed sort of the same thing...
They're 2 or 3 long, thin strips of callulus like on each elbow. There's not hair on the callus area but it's strange that they're long and skinny (look like a cat scratch but they're not). Anyone know if this is normal?
