Re: I have a question... Thank you for your kind words, they have really helped. I decided that I will look into helping at a shelter or rescue when I finally recieve my drivers license. This is because I live 30-ish minutes away from the downtown area of Hawaii, which is where a shelter will likely be located (I think?). I guess for now I will just help take care of my grandparents...they have taken care of me single-handedly even since I was one. The thing that I hate is that it came all too sudden for them. My grandma was so eccentric, lively and acted so young before the arthritis made an impact not more than 2 months ago. Now all she can do is limp around in pain, and sleep all day. She has also lost much of her cognitive ability. My grandpa has also gotten weaker just as fast, even though his mind is still just as strong. I wish I could do something to help but I can't...and I can't imagine life without them.

Re: I have a question... Have you considered dog walking/ taking care of neighborhood dogs ie letting them out during the day while working? I second the idea to volunteer at a shelter..it's a good way to meet/learn about the different breeds of dogs ie their energy levels and lifestyle requirements.

Re: I have a question... Sorry about your grandparents....aging and the effects, can be so hard to deal with in loved ones. There are a variety of resources for seniors that can help them in their daily living...and take a little bit of pressure off you. Spend as much time as you can with them....but know that what will make them happiest is to know that you continue on with your life in the positive direction you have indicated throughout your posts. Between college and your grandparents...now isnot the time for a puppy. But keep reading the forums; work with rescues/shelters if you can and you will be in EXCELLENT shape when it is time to get your own rotti pup.

Re: I have a question... I say volunteer when u can at the Hawaiian Humane Society! I can now say I own my very first dog and I am finished school yet I couldn't imagine having him at the time in college. I live on the same island as u so u can always babysit too for ppl and make some extra cash and be with adoring furbabies! :)

Re: I have a question... I have been wanting a Rott since before I was in college too. I figured the same as you that I would not have the time so I didnt get one. I've been out of college for 3 years and looking back at it, I dont have any more time now than I did when I was in school (possibly less) and I had one of the toughest majors (Aerospace Engineering). I tend to work better under pressure so having a dog and therefore less time for school would probably have improved my grades. Anyway, I'm about to get a dog now and I think I'll be able to find the time required. My advice is opposite everyone elses. I say if you REALLY REALLY want a dog can find an apt that allows you to have one you should go for it BUT only after a semester or 2 of school so you can get yourself in the swing of things. You seem like youve done the research and should know whats involved in raising a dog - what you dont know is what college is all about. So take a semsester to get a feel for it then decide for yourself if you think youll be able to handle it.

Re: I have a question... Many great reasons posted here on why not to get a dog/puppy/Rottweiler. ENJOY College, enjoy your friends and freedom. It goes fast. A dog is a fantastic friend to have but I could give you a long list of oppurtunities I missed when I was young because I had dogs.It is acually something I would go back and change if I could..Loved every one very much but should have waited to get some life under my belt before being so tied down. You spend the whole rest of your life tied down by something...At that stage. Your dog is not holding you back, he is giving you pleasure in the life you have chosen Good luck to you and your grandparents. They are very lucky to have you.

Re: I have a question... Hey Frost, Glad to hear you have reconsidered, as my Rott is from my daughter's college friend who also was sure she could handle it. She lasted there about a week before she came to live with me!!!! Not only get involved with rescue, but check into a kennel club or other training facility in the area you will be in, maybe they can use some volunteer (or paid) help, and you can get a heads up on training techniques in the meantime. And start checking into breeders, as many of them have waiting lists, and you will need to prove yourself to them to get a dog. So your rescue/other work will be very important. Heck, maybe there's even a breeder in the area who would be able to use your help at shows/etc. Good luck, and congrats on picking the BEST breed there is!!!!!! Pat

| Re: I have a question... Honey take these experts advise and wait. Work with your grandparents, do what you can for them. We all have a lonely moment and want something of our own to hold onto. You are a very wise person, first you sought out the board, then you admitted your mistakes with the older dog you once had. So, those are steps in the right directions. Since you will be in a position of not having to work while in school, working the shelter is the best and most rewarding job or pet sitting. Only wishing you the very best. Please do come back anytime.
