Talking protective instincts?

i own a 7 mounth old female rotti, i got her because i have been brocken into lots of times in the past year and nothing seems to stop these mongrels from getting in. i was told by a friend to sociolize her only with my family and our close friends and she should get very protective and not let anyone else onto our property. Re: protective instincks

Having had a few dogs in my life, I can say that some are more protective than others and I will let people with more training and handling experience comment farther.

That said, in my opinion, it is the presence of a dog, any dog, that deters most thieves. One of my friends worked as a educator in a maximum security prison. He got in a number of conversations with hard core criminals who all said the just having a dog on the property, any size dog for that matter, made them go on to the next, easier house.

I am to understand that this is what you want? I seriously hope not! True protection dogs take years of serious training. Rottweilers are not aggressive or mean by nature. If you thought they were, you were sadly mistaken. Love and train your dog and it will be loyal. Having a rott will intimidate some thieves, but not all. A well placed chunk of meat usually calms any dog except those that have been trained.

Don't know if I am doing this correctly or not. This topic, although it started off differently than yours, has ALL of the answers you are looking for I believe.

Re: protective instincts?

I think personality has a lot to do with it... Tavi will happily eat anyone that she considers a threat and this is dangerous and like a loaded gun and we are working with meds and vet and socialization to help this... tucker, on the other hand... greets people happily... but did stop an intruder with a bite and hold... having never even growled at anyone before.

If you want a stable dog, then socialization is key to build confidence. if she only ever sees you or family, what you're asking for is a fear agression bite. she needs training with someone that is qualified and if she's had no socialization, then start now... with someone knowledgable.

Re: protective instincts?

Give her some more time. The "protective" behavior usually does not start until somewhere around 12-16month old.

What is "broken into?" Your home? Your Business? Your barn? And it's "mongrels" that are breaking in... dogs?

If it's your home or business, and humans are breaking in, perhaps consider an alarm system. Adding motion detection lights or installing cameras may help as well. It takes years of specialized training for a dog to become a protection dog.

If mongrels are breaking in put up a fence, perhaps. Pack dogs could carry rabies and other diseases. You don't want your girl bitten.

Someone mentioned "a piece of meat." Yes that would deter most dogs, wouldn't you say? The meat can easily be poisioned, and you'd have a dead dog.

Now, barking an alarm is different. Your girl is a puppy. Rottie's mature more slowly than some smaller breeds, both physically and mentally. Most will bark at something unusual or suspicious. For some it takes up to 2 years before alarm barking is developed fully. They are a calm, aloof, confident dog not given to indescriminate friendships. You do NOT want an aggressive dog. Rottweilers have a "wait and see" attitude. As mentioned... unusual, suspicious... etc.

Re: protective instincts?

You probably didn't do any research about the breed before you got your Rottie. A pity--because if you had, you'd probably realize a Rottie isn't the best for your circumstances.

An alarm system would have been much more effective much more quickly. You have years of training ahead of you with your Rottie.

Re: protective instincts?

In my opinion your dog has the natural instinct to protect you and your home regardless if its socialized with strangers, my dog was socialized with people yet he knows when strangers are not welcome at my home, you should socialize this pup with everyone not just family and friends, what happens when she becomes "protective" for no reason and bites someone becuase you didnt socialize her? thats another rotty that has to be put down due to lack of knowledge from the owner.. I agree get an alarm system... or one of those barking ones...
