Eating Grass??? and a comment

Kinzie was sick this morning, and when we were asking around, we were told that my wife's mother's old dogs would get sick, eat some grass and be fine.

When I took her out today, she had a buffet of grass to eat. She seems fine.

My question here is: Is this normal? The weirdest thing I think I have ever seen is a 100 lb Rottie tonguing and chewing grass, looking ever so much like a cow!!!

Now, on to the SADDEST thing I have ever seen. We gave Kinzie a bath last night, and from the moment she stepped in the tub (which was willingly) she gave us the BIGGEST, SADDEST ROTTIE PUPPY EYES I have ever seen in my life. I swear, it was like those silly cards and posters you see with the over-exaggerated, caracture eyes, lol.

My two eat grass too, especially in the spring. It's funny because they DO look exactly like cows. ha ha ha ha
These dogs certainly provides us with so many sweet moments, don't they?

Your not alone in the grass eating dept. Serena eats it as well as dirt. I asked the vet and he said it was not a big deal.

All my personal dogs and most of the fosters, graze. We don't spray anything on our property, so I don't try to stop them.

They will also eat mud at the beaver pond.

Re: Eating Grass??? and a comment

i have a really funny story about grass eating dogs, i was walking one of our pets,a boxer, at work(i work for a vet). He needed to go potty so i took him out when suddenly i notice stalks of grass coming out of his butt.. he dropped some, but when i thought he was done he had like a huge handfull of grass strings hanging from his butt. a nurse had to come with gloves and literally pull it out. indiana eats grass too, she lays down and just starts chomping.

You can supplement their diet with Alfalfa tablets, they get vitamins from the grass. Ever wonder why they enjoy horse and cow poop? Vitamins.

Re: Eating Grass??? and a comment

My two eat grass all the time. There was a time when I thought they were just mimicking the cats (they love their cat grass I have for them). They are like little cows and it's so cute to watch them, although I never eat from the fence line, because the neighbors have gardens on the fence line and I don't know if they spray or not. They also hate the lawnmower and bark at it constantly, maybe because it's "eating" their grass?

Hi,

Our Sabu always ate grass when he wasn't feeling well. You could tell when he had a belly ache, because his stomach would grumble. Sure enough, on those days, you would find him grazing for grass. Not just any grass, they like the tough, sharp-edged grass that grows like weeds around the edge of a yard. My mom always said dogs used that grass for medicine and I guess it's true. It was sure funny to watch though - a big rottweiler pulling at a little strand of grass and chomping on it like a cow or something!!!

DC has been eating grass lately, I asked my vet about it, and he said that grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively.

I just read an article about grass eating and it is actually a wife's tail that the eat it because they are sick and have to throw up. They eat it because it tastes good. My pittie pup eats grass all the time.

They said that dogs throw up from grass because it slides down and causes a gag reflex...

My Daisy does love her "salad." Funniest part is when there is a blade of grass sticking out of her, er, (rhymes with grass) bum, and it requires extraction by grasping it with a leaf or kleenex. She always looks so puzzled!

I'd add "deer poop" to the list of favored delicacies as well!

Rhea loves eating grass (and leaves, and sticks, and plants, and mud, and especially sand from the lake) - as long as it's in moderation it's fine.

Re: Eating Grass??? and a comment

I wouldn't worry too much , unless there are other signs for alarm.

Eating grass is not always a sign of feeling sick.

Sometimes they also eat it to "wrap around" an object that might be potentially irritating to thier stomach or intestines.
