| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar My Ruby had TPLO on June 1. I had a problem with the e collar fitting in the crate so I bought an X-pen and put her favorite bed in it. It worked really really well for the first few weeks. Then after she got her staples out, all was ok cuz she fit in the crate with no problem. I did run into one difficulty. One night she threw up and the collar was too snug and held the gastric juices against her neck (instead of flowing on down her chest, I know yuckie mess). The long and short of it, is she got a really BAD hot spot on her neck and the side of her face. She could not longer wear her e collar because it would further irritate her hot spot. So I ended up sitting next to her about 16 hours a day to keep her from scratching her neck. Then when I needed to sleep. I'd put the collar on, very loosely so that it fell below her neck closer to the shoulder area, and hoped for the best. It worked out well, it was pretty clear in about 3 days. Sorry to digress....... The x-pen worked really well, and it is portable too. Good luck Niki |

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar I agree with keeping them in an ex pen while recuperating. Just make sure that she will not try to jump out of it (you can always pin a sheet over the top to make her think it is a solid top. Otherwise, you can also "trim" the E-collar. Just take a pair of heavy scissors and trim it down a couple of inches. It will still keep her from her leg, but allow a bit more freedom.

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar Emmy has one of the Soft E Collars and it works just great as long as the dog doesn't want to lick front paws! When Emmy broke her toe on her back foot this was wonderful. She could see, no banging noise and she could sleep in it because it made a pillow for her head when she laid down. We love it!EmmysMom |

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar The bite not collar is absolutely a wonderful invention. I don't know if you could get them to ship it to you, but this is what I had after my girls' TPLO and it was awesome!

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar I shipped mine to Canada for a member who needed one. the agreement was that if someone else needed one and couldn't get one that it would be passed along as sort of a community collar. Maybe she will read this and follow up. |

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar when my jack needed one following neuter surgery due to scotal swelling because he wouldn't leave the area alone, i made an alternative (i had to since he managed to destroy two elizabethan collars!). i took one of those larger size bath towels, folded it in half, then folded it in half again, duct taping it to hold the folds. i wrapped it snugly around jack's neck, duct taping around the wrap. it was far less uncomfortable for him since he could rest his head on it and there were no sharp edges to irritate him. he was able to easily eat and drink, and didn't have trouble navigating the house in it. |

| Re: can anyone recommend another collar than Elizabethan Collar I was impressed with the new soft collars--like a wraparound pillow but my most helpful item was the fentanyl patch! The night before surgery it was applied, so she went in the morning calm. It kept her calm for the overnight at the vet. I had an extra patch or two applied in the first few days following her ACL surgery. She was simply watched (no collar!) at all times and when sleeping we put a blanket over the wound which she was too sedated to pull aside. Yet she was easy to rouse to go out for a quick pee. I am convinced that the skill of the surgeon Dr Amy Kantor and the pain relief from fentanyl insured her success. It's held strong for 5 years! |
