Sorry, Question about dog waste..

Sorry to ask this, but... even though i have only one dog, she produces a fair amount of waste in the yard. She wont toilet when out or anywhere but the yard. This is great but im left with an ongoing problem. Where to i put it all. I purchased a doggy toilet that comes with a chemical to break the waste down, but it didnt work. If i use the garbage can i get swarmed with flies even if tied up in bags. Cant put it into the sewers. So what now? How do you guys dispose of it? Sorry if its a dumb question too.

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

Well, since the chemical toilet didn't work and you don't want to use your garbage, here is another option. This is going to sound gross, BUT..... My Brother-in-law used to have a plastic 5 gallon bucket that he would dump his dog's feces into. He would allow flies to get into the bucket and he would then simply put a lid on it. The flies would of course lay eggs and their larvae would hatch, thus creating maggots. This would create a self-contained ecosystem that would cyclically produce maggots that would then consume the feces so that there was constant breakdown of the waste. The bucket NEVER got full and believe it or not, the smell was locally contained and was not an annoyance. If you want to try this, I'd suggest that you simply keep the bucket somewhere in your yard away from your home. Just be sure that the lid stays on good and tight, and that will be a good alternative solution to tossing the waste in the garbage bin.
Good luck!

Hmmm.... Ok, I'll assume you are being serious, right?

We pick up after Rhea every couple of days, double- or tripple- bag it (grocery store-size plastic bags, one in another) and toss in the garbage can with a lid (garbage pick up once a week). The smell doesn't get out and doesn't attract any flies or other nasties... A freind of ours takes his "bags of stuff" while on his evening walk to the local "community center" - they have giant garbage bins (the "commercial", huge metal ones) that get cleaned out every couple of days.

This is close to what we do...I justy have a "dog poop" garbage bin outside...with a tight locking lid so the smell doesn't get out and the animals don't get in. I make sure to put it in the shade I empty the BIG garbage bag once a week whether it's full or not. I do notice a few flies bot nothing I would calll excessive or disgusting!

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

With 5 dogs, we do the same thing - a "poop barrel" with a big contractor size garbage bag in it, and we take the bag to the dump once a week.

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

I live somewhat in the country, so I pick up his poop in biodegradale poopy bags and put them in a big 50 GAL metal barrel. WE also put yard clipings and stuff in there too-and burn them. Its also good for pizza boxes and cardboard.

Yeah its gross, but it works. You have to wait until the poo is dry and crusty to burn too, LOL!

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

We have a seperate garbage can with a TIGHT FITTING lid with a strong, black garbage bag that we put Julius' poo. All of the poop is placed in plastic bags & although it doesn't smell wonderful, it's really not all that bad.
We put it on the other side of our garage, so that we don't have to pass it every day. Once the bag gets full, we just include it in with our trash on garbage day. Yes, there are flies, but it's not that big of a problem for us. The key is to get a trash can with a tight fitting lid!

Ahhh, my favorite past-time - POOP PATROL We have trash pickup every Monday and Thursday, so we double bag ours and it goes out with our weekly pickups. We have tight fitting lids like Brooke said and I'm sure our trash man knows us WELL - but it's not offensive really - just part of having dogs

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

Arwens poop isn't really that smelly (Thank goodness). My husband picks it up daily and puts it in a small bag and tosses it in the outside trash can. We don't get any more flies then we did before, but I have to say we are looking forward to putting in a fence so we can keep the cans out by the sandbox puppy poop area we plan on training her to use.

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

We have a 5 gallon trash barrel inside a 20 gallon trash barrel that gets emptied once a week and goes out with the trash... Works well for us. Can't notice the smell in the yard unless the darn thing is open to deposit in.

Ditto...except my pickups are on Tuesday and Friday. And I've chatted with our garbage collectors and they know my house all too well...but all is forgiven at the holidays as I bake them lots of goodies as a simple thank you for all year long. It's always easier to catch flies with honey than vinegar. No pun intended!

We used to do that too, but with 5 dogs...we decided to start taking it to the dump.

I must say I have some pretty funny poop mishap stories of my husband having the bag break, or the barrel tip and the like

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

I pick up the poo every other day, put it in a plastic bag, tie it shut and put it in my regular garbace container. The garbage container has a tight-fitting lid, since it must be kept inside my garage except on pick-up day (homeowners association rule). There is no smell in the garage except when I have to open the garbage container, and then I just open the garage door for a little while to air it out.

Re: Sorry, Question about dog waste..

Well I pick mine up and throw it in the neighbors yard LOL JK

I use the small grocery bags and put them inside a small 13 gallon trash bag and put them in the garbage can, I pick it up every other day If the dogs have runny pooh I wash it off the grass with the hose, I did have a bad incident last week I had a bag with pooh in it and I had to stop picking it up to go inside and forgot about it and my DH hit it with the tractor What a gross mess that was to clean

And I really am joking about the neighbors yard
