I think you need to take hours, read through many of the threads here, and make your own decision.

If you do a lot of reading and searching of these forums for particular questions, you can gleen a lot of information in order to make a qualified decision. You need to really learn about each breed individually before making this type of decision.

You need to see which breed you are suited for, which breed you have the facilities for and how much you are willing to put into each breed (in terms of obedience training, ethical management - which includes spaying or neutering, not indiscriminate breeding) and which would fit best into your family situation.

Start reading and learning and if you have particular questions you cannot find answers for, then come back and ask them!

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

This is a great place to start to research Rottweilers, however, few of us have experience with Akitas, so it is doubtful we will be able to compare the 2 for you. You need to talk to breeders of both and make the comparisons for yourself.

I do know both were bred for very different things, so that alone should make you prepared for some extensive research and a good hard look into your own life to decide which will fit best.

Good luck in your search!

Kristi

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

Some friends of ours got an Akita the same time we got we got our Rottweiler. They both turned a year in May. Jayda (our Rottweiler) weighs 75 and their Akita weighs 110. Smaller is better in my book (and in my house). Just my two cents. Jill

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

I really think it depends on what you are looking for in the breed, what characteristics would fit your family / lifestyle better. For example, I don't think I would have enough energy to raise a dalmatian puppy (at least from what I've seen - maybe a generalization on my part)...

I took care of an Akita for an older retired police office in 1995 for about 5 months untill they moved to Arizona. I loved King, he was the most mellow, well-behaved - most of the time, very loyal, affectionate and protective dog (although there was this unhealthy fascination with cats and any other small animals - they HAD TO be chased, no matter what...)

Now I have a rottie girl and love her to death. She gets her zoomies 3 times a day (dunno how she keeps it on schedule, but she does!), but mostly a mellow velcro pup that hopefully (if I don't screw up) will grow into a happy, healthy, wonderful, obedient companion.

I also highly recommend - regardless of the breed you choose - to let the experienced breeder pick the pup that they feel is the best match for you. A lot depends on individual characteristics of the pup, besides the breed-specific traits.

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

Well, my BF has an Akita and I had a Rotty...We both found an Akita much harder to "read" and VERY stubborn. He is also never allowed off-leash around dogs, animals or children...not that he's ever done anything...but I've seen his eyes "change" in a flash to kill-mode (before we distracted him)which is something I've never seen in a Rottweiler. (thank God)

Even my BF says if we ever got another dog it would have to be a Rottie.

I don't believe either breed is the perfect dog for a first-time owner...but they are both magnificent, striking dogs...and a HUGE commitment! If you have successfully raised Chows before, you should be able to handle either breed.

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

I live with both a chow and a rottie. There is a HUGE difference between the breeds with regard to health, energy issues, trainability, lifestyle, etc. Yes, they are both strong willed breeds, but how you cope and deal with it is completely different. I love them both, but IMO they are totally different in every way.

Rottweilers are much easier to brush than Akitas.

Re: Thinking about getting a rottweiler or a Akita

I owned an Akita and now own a Rottweiler. My Akita was extremely mellow and very friendly with people. They are definitely harder to train (at least mine was) but she was extremely loyal. My Rottweiler has a very different personalty - more accessible but more work. My Rottweiler requires more exercise and more training and although she is not exactly biddable, she is as sweet as my Akita but more engaging. My Rottweiler is always lying at my feet if I am hanging out where as my Akita stayed nearby but liked her space....I adore both breeds but it really depends on what you are looking for in a dog. If you could elaborate, maybe we could be of more help.
