Unhappy Dispell The Myths!

Okay everyone,

Let's make a thread about all of the excuses we've heard over the years of BYB's and simply, bad breeders. So that if someone were to come here and see a line that they recognized from their potential puppy seller - that it would send off warning bells for them.

Please post the line, and then why they say it. I'll start.

"Oh, we only breed for pets. So that's why we don't show / work / compete our dogs."

This is NOT why. Showing, working, competing in ANY arena takes time, determination, knowledge, skill and money. They don't do any of these things because they can't be bothered. The fact of the matter is, the temperament, ability and stability of the parents of your puppy are going to impact the temperament, ability, stability of your puppy. Unless they've been evaluated on some formal field - by experts in those fields - then how will you ever know?

We all think that our dogs are the best dogs. Which is why we cannot evaluate our own dogs. That is why taking them out, having them reviewed by many different sources and accepting those evaluations from various venues is so important to any breeding animal.

Next? :)

Re: Dispell The Myths!

MYTH:He's a "rare" rottweiler because he has a long curley coat. That makes him more valuable.

Fact: There is NO "valuble rare long coated rottweiler " It's an out of standard dog. This is a sales Gimmick from a person who knows nothing about breeding to the rottweiler standard, and is also trying to take more money from you.

Re: Dispell The Myths!

MYTH: "RED" Rottweilers are very rare and VERY expensive to purchase....

FACT: They may be rare, but their coat coloration is incorrect and a result of an undesirable gene. They do not meet breed standard and should not be represented as worth "more" simply due to their coloring.

Re: Dispell The Myths!

" Oh you cant pet the parents they get shy around people" Or I Dont ALLow people to pet my dogs"

FACT They are not socialized very well with others therefore their temperment isnt the best and you should find some parents you can see and pet

Re: Dispell The Myths!

WOW, good idea Trish!

How about this one:

'Oh, it was an accident that our 9 month old puppy was bred, she was out and we didn't know she was in season .....'

Yeah .... RIGHT!

Re: Dispell The Myths!

O.k....I'll just post the ad my BYB has in the paper right now:

Males, AKC/USRC Int'l Ch./SCHIII lines, (conformation/working), OFA - 6 Generations Good Hips/Elbows Normal, Bred for temperament and physical soundness. To Qualified homes, Serious inquiries only. Torrington, CT.

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? Not only does she not show or work her dogs, but she is not involved in any club because she cannot be bothered. Fact is, she does not want to be held accountable for her actions and I doubt anyone would allow her to join after all the damage she's done to the breed. She has produced so many ill dogs it would make your head spin, not to mention dogs that had to be put down for bad temperament.

She has also been arrested for forgery and uses false OFA's. She is not a registered kennel in her town even though she says she's been breeding (under a kennel name) for over 20 years. She has been suspended from AKC and uses 4 aliases interchangeably. From the above ad, it sounds like she is still using the same piece of junk stud dog that she used to sire my poor mess.

I see she no longer advertises 10 or 8 generations of "Good Hips"! Gee, my dog has HD and that was only 2 generations ago. Very predictably, she is still duping people. I would go so far as to say she has NEVER bred 1 generation that did not have some kind of physical or emotional problem. She should be in jail!!!!!!!

Re: Dispell The Myths!

"We haven't gotten the official papers yet but the Vet/OFA gave us the all clear"

If you are there to PICK UP a puppy, then they bred to soon. All papers should be IN the breeders hand BEFORE they breed the dogs! This is the line I fell for. Amazingly, Arwen is 15 months now (so that would be over a year and a half since the original breeding date) and she still hasen't "gotten the papers" in the mail yet. DUH because she didn't send in OFFICIAL X-rays to get OFFICIAL reg numbers!

Re: Dispell The Myths!

Myth ;Those amber eyes are very rare. We chose her for our store because she had those exotic eyes.
Fact: Rottweilers should have brown eyes as breed standard not yellow.

Re: Dispell The Myths!

How about: Bred for superior size? Custom importing of puppies and adults? Shipping worldwide?

Then there's the ever popular: Rottie's as they were during the Roman wars? Bred for size?

(Eh? Call me stupid but, wouln't that be before they were Rottweilers? They would still have been Roman Mastiffs?)

Also seem to remember: German blockheads!

Re: Dispell The Myths!

There are some websites out there that read like used car sales pitches...scary...it's obvious that the marketing works though because they keep pumping out puppies (and often placing them inappropriately)!

Some of those "sales pitches"...
"insane type", "extreme bone", "huge heads" (or some other body part), "wide feet" (this one really confused me...why would I want a Rottweiler with wide feet?)...etc, etc .
