what is the right time to fix female?

I have heard differing opionions on when to fix a female. A breeder that I know says to let her go through her 1st cycle. I have heard that for health reasons she should be fixed far sooner. Are there really different opinions on this?

I was always told 18 months with males, but that you dont have to wait until a females first heat so anytime from 4 months is what my vet mentioned

I utilized the "search" feature which is located above & found these threads:

There are many other threads on this subject. You might want to do a search for "spay". You will come up with many other threads.....

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

I read on this web site about an article from Cornell University. Males and females should be12 to 18 months. If done sooner you can increase their chances of Osteosarcoma on males 64% and females 35%. Seeing that Cancer is so prominant in Rotties my vet suggested waiting till Ruger is 18 months old. I neutered TeddyBear at 6 months and lost him to Osteosarcoma in Oct. and he was 8 yrs. old. I am not taking any chances this time.

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

My female will be spayed next month. She will be 18 months old then. She was a late bloomer in the heat cycle. I would wait until she had the first.

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

I waited until first heat cycle too. It was at 9 months, now I wished I had waited a bit more. It was more an accident as time passed fast while in school & working. I realized her first heat cycle hit and had to count back, lol. Quiet honestly, I'm glad I waited. Athena is very small & lean, so the extra months helped her with rott traits - such as filling out in chest, hind legs musculature, etc.

Sasha, previous female rott ( such a sweetheart, I still miss her), was much more masculine looking rott than my boy Max is! looking back at body structure, etc, Sasha really makes me understand the terms 'bitchy male' and vice versa.

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

We had Arwen spayed when she was 6 months old before her first heat. I didn't want to wait until a first heat because it was recommended from my vet and in my contract from the breeder to have it done early. In the future I may wait longer based on other studies I have read since then, but I may not.

Arwen has grown lovely, she is wonderfully within standard (24in 80lbs), healthy, beautiful , and to be perfectly honest, I don't know if I am up to the task of keeping other peoples dogs from eating my walls to get to a bitch in heat! I am not a breeder and may never decide to breed (definatley not Arwen, my first ever dog), and at this point in time I am not confident I could safely keep a bitch in season away from males.

I would say no....not sure why your girl had this problem, but she still would have been very young after only two heat cycles, so I would not say she was spayed late, and wouldn't think the timing affected the healing. My present girl was not spayed until she was 8 1/2 (right before she came to live with me), after who knows how many heat cycles, and came through it beautifully, healing very quickly.

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

My vet advised the following, If you want to realize the health benefits for avoiding breast cancer, spay early, before the six month age or heat cycle. If you are more concerned with the new studies on other types of cancer prevention, let her go through at least one heat possibly two. The healing is usually easier on a younger dog.We spayed Lola at 14 months before her second heat. She was fine.

Talking Re: what is the right time to fix female?

After reading this thread I'm really confused. I have a female that is 12 weeks old. I was told she should be 4 months or before her 1st heat cycle. I have no intentions on breeding. I also don't want/know how to deal with a heat cycle. I am a new owner. I have had my Peaches only 3 weeks. Help ?

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

-smiles slightly-

I was in the same position. All of my previous dogs (growing up or otherwise) were males.. and neutered. I had no need to figure out the female heat cycle. There are plenty of resources if you are curious. You can do a simple web search and find out lengths, degrees, the different sections of the heat cycle and what to expect.

My little girl went into heat for the first time at 12 months old. She was average in that respect but had an extremely light heat. I was told you do not have to wait for the first cycle to go through before getting her spayed, but I also saw no problem with letting her go through it once.

I was scared to... even with all of the information I had read about it, it is not like going through it. To take her outside and see another dog respond to her being out there and have to run back in lol.. etc etc.. You will be fine.. it's a natural process...

Re: what is the right time to fix female?

Well, I got Kinzie at about 2 years old. She is still intact. Is it too late to change it?

I know I will never breed her. And I will never let her out of my sight near another dog (planning on this one, anyway). Is it worth it?

It's not too late to have her spayed. To me, spaying and neutering is definitely worth it since I have no intentions of being a breeder (intentional or otherwise), do not want to show, etc.
