| Ok. I am new to this site and am reading a lot about what it is to own a rottweiler but now I need some advice for me personally. I do not own a rott but am considering the possibility. I want to make sure I am making a decision out of logic and not out of pure impulse. I have always wanted a rottweiler and I must admit when I read some things on this site, I wasn't sure if I qualified. But after doing some more investigation and evaluating my characteristics, I still feel I will be a good match. Here's my situation: I am 25 years old, I have a wife, no kids but will eventually start a family. I played baseball all the way through college and know what it means to work hard and be dedicated to something. I trained my golden growing up and now I have a miniature dachsund who is about a 1 1/2 years old. I live in a house with a decent size backyard fenced in but in a neighborhood full of kids. I also have neices and nephews that come over on random occasions. We have people over at our house all the time so socialization to people would not be a problem. I have somewhat of a flexible work schedule and never work on weekends so I will have time to spend. Here's my question: Although you probably have a lot more questions about me, could you see me owning a rottweiler? As long as he/she is trained, would children be a problem? Is there a problem with having a small dog and a big dog? Any counsel given would be helpful. Thanks ![]() |

| Re: What do you think? I have a large dog (Am.Bulldog) A small dog and A 10 week old rotty pup , Your Small dog is the senior resident dog and so is mine so she is actually the one in charge here, I do not see a problem with owning a large breed and a small breed they can play just like 2 small or 2 large dogs. As for the kids I think Rotts are great with kids as are any of dog is properly socialized with them I am socialing my puppy like crazy with neighbors, kids at the park other dogs etc. So I do not see an issue at all as long as you have the time, patience to train properly and socialize him/her. And its a joint decision between you and your wife. My husband wasnt all keen on another dog at first but after he bought Gypsy for me he loves her she gets on his lap everyday, Rotts can be lap dogs to. Also I see you are in Florida make sure he/she has a cool place to stay. My dogs like it outside but the bigger 2 are not fond of the heat and can only take it so long before they want the AC Good Luck |

| Re: What do you think? Hi and welcome. Glad you are here researching this breed before beginning a search for one. As far as the children issue goes, as long as there is constant supervision by you or your wife than there shouldn’t be any issues. I have three small kids, plus a house full of their friends on a regular basis and I have never had a problem. Elsa likes being with them, and they love her. I just always have to be on guard that something could happen. It is also important to teach all children that come into contact with a dog how to behave around dogs. Might as well begin talking to the adults too, I've encountered my share that arent well schooled. I cannot comment on living with a small dog, because I only own one dog. But Elsa visits my mom's house on occasion. Her Mini Pin and Bassett have put Elsa in her place more than once, and Elsa respects them in their home. But each dog is different. I'm sure others will comment on how their household dynamics work. Again, glad you are here. And I hope you'll stick around for a while. ~Kim

| Re: What do you think? You hit the nail on the head! As long as you train your rott, you'll do fine. I have three kids ages 5, 7 and 8. Our rott Serena fits right in to all the madness. I can't imagine life without a rott. As far as the kids in the neighborhood, as long as you walk her around the neighborhood to meet and see the kids, there will be no problem. I bring mine to the school everyday to be surrounded by kids, she loves the attention. |
