Unhappy Muzzle Law? (UK)

Hi,

My dad got our rottweiler about a week ago, and since then has been showing him to a few people he knows.

Well 2 people have said to my dad that by law in the United Kingdom, when taking your rottweiler out, you must muzzle it.

Now I personally wouldn't know if this is correct or not, so thought I would ask you guys and see if anyone here knew.

Many thanks.

Re: Muzzle Law? (UK)

i havent yet ever heard that it was law to have a muzzle on the rottweiler in the uk, i live in the south and there is quite a few rotties around here, none of them wear a muzzle.
they are trying to get the staffie to wear a muzzle as a young one ate a yorkshire terrier a month a go, but that is just thought at the moment.

No, muzzles are not law in the uk, but you must have a name tag when your dog is out of the house. Where i live there are literally hundreds of staffys that are not friendly at all to dogs which is why i dont like the idea of walking my dog with a muzzle. If she were to get attacked by a unsocialized staff id like my dog to have a fighting chance to protect herself. Sometimes ive found that certain vets like to see my rotts with muzzles, but i guess thats down to there previous experiences with many big dogs.

Re: Muzzle Law? (UK)

Chrystal,

Rottweilers do NOT need to be muzzled in the UK. Unfortunately a lot of people say things without really knowing what they are talking about . Do a search for the Dangerous Dogs Act (1991, amended 1997) - only 'types' of dogs that are prohibited (or if already owned required to be muzzled, neutered, tattooed, microchipped etc.) are Pit Bull Terrier , Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro.

For a desciption of the 'types', see here: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welf...ogsleaflet.pdf
