Re: Why a Rotty?

Why a Rott?

Because to look into those brown eyes and see the love, affection, trust looking back at you hits the soul! I call Rotti's my "soul" dogs - they have so much to share and give and it's a never-ending! They teach us so much - every dog I've ever had has taught me something, and for that I will always be grateful!

And because they will guard (when needed) and will step back (when needed).

And because they are what everyone else has described above!

And because it's a privilege to be a part of these dog's lives and family!

Re: Why a Rotty?

Always wanted one. After i put my beloved GSD to sleep last year after 11 years I knew there was never going to be another that compared to him the way the breed is so screwed up here in America with the sloped backs and smaller size. Zeus was 27" and 127lbs, huge the way they used to be and absolutely wonderful with my kids growing up. He was from Czech stock and the breeder has since stopped breeding them so I decided to go with a Rottie. My Caesar is quite a bit smaller than Zeus was but at only 9 weeks he is always amazing us with how smart he is. He's going to be a great dog I can tell already...:)

Re: Why a Rotty?

Didn't worry about the shedding, just kept a couple of shed blades on hand, took care of that problem.

Re: Why a Rotty?

It's a grooming tool they have for both dogs and horses. A strip of flexible metal with a leather grip on each end (and there's a loop to fasten the ends together.) There's a serrated edge on one side of the metal strip. Run it across the coat, and it pulls out the loose hair. I have one, but I prefer the Hartz brush I got at the grocery store. (so does Missy) Wire pegs on one side, regular brush on the other.

Periodic shedding aside, these wonderful dogs are worth every loose hair. And that's coming from someone with pearl grey carpet and light grey almost white floor tile!

Re: Why a Rotty?

I rescued my girl from the animal shelter right before I found out that I was pregnant with my son.

From day one in my home, she was attentive, willing and eager to do what I asked of her, and gentle.

As she lived with us, she became very much my dog. She made sure that she knew where I was in the house and could usually be found in the same room. The only exception to this was at night. Between the time that my girls went to bed and I went to bed, she could be found laying by the girls bedroom door. When I went to bed, she was either on the floor by my side of the bed or in the doorway.

My house was broken into once. I came home to find both my front and back door wide open, but nothing was missing and Chase was sleeping peacefully in my sunroom. I couldn't tell you if she actively did anything to protect her home or if she just got up and went to see who was coming in but I do know that nothing was missing.

She was My dog but she was my son's best friend. He used her for a stepping stool, a chair, a race track and he tried to get her to give him a "piggy back" ride more then once. She always just sat down. When he went through that stage when he had bad dreams at night, she slept on the end of his bed until he went to sleep.

She was the dog that all of the neighbors' brought their young children to meet. She showed them that just because she was big and scary looking, she was very gentle and a pat on the head was sure to get them a good face cleaning. My next door neighbor's 3 year old niece would come to the door, knock and politely ask if Chase could come out and play.

I once had a rough coated collie. Nothing in her personality could compare to Chase. Not so good with young children, not willing to spend time with the kids instead of me.

There were way too many things about Chase that I loved and miss about her to put in just one post. But having had dogs all of my life - everything from poms to GSD's - I can tell you that the rottweiler is the breed for me and I can't wait until I am in the position to have another one.

Re: Why a Rotty?

That is an awsome story!!!!!! I wish alot more people could hear story's like these, then the Rotty might have a better rep than they do. I have stories like that with my Dutchess and my sons. Now I have Kyzer and I know there are going to be stories with him as he grows up.
Thank You for sharing!!

Re: Why a Rotty?

I am not a expert on rottsbut I would not take a million dollars for my girls.Maggie is the oldest and she was a freebie.A friend had a litter and gave her to us Christmas of 1999. Maggie made me love the breed and I have since then met several and found them all but 1 to be great people. My parents had the bad one and it was not her fault. Her name was Murphy and when she was almost a year old someone had tried to break into my parents home, when Murphy defended the home and herself they kicked her so hard and so often that her jaw bone was shattered and so was one of her front legs. If my dad had not got home when he did Murphy would have bled to death. After that Murphy was not fond of people except for my parents. She got blastomycosis (sp?) and died from it. Murphy had a reason to not like people. Boy I strayed for the topic.

After Maggie we got Abigail, she is a flea market pup. Abbie is 15 mths old. Both my girls make me laugh and I love them dearly. If I could I would have a house full.

Re: Why a Rotty?

Because:
They only have one shedding season
- Jan 01 through Dec 31
You give them a quarter of the bed
- But take-up 3/4 during the night
They are very intelligent and fast learners
- But when they get bored, no amount of coaxing will motivate them to do anything they don't want to
They love their owners
- But will push you away when they have had enough loving
They are alert, nobel, prey driven pranksters
- but others may never see it that way
Because they are not docile Labradores, or cute cuddlers

- They are hard driving workers, grunts, and dependable in a pinch

...To know a Rotty... is to love a Rotty

Re: Why a Rotty?

I love how passionate they are about their family. It is a wonderful feeling to earn the loyalty and trust of one of these magnificent dogs. They are noble, stoic and yet huge goofballs at the same time. They are beautiful and substantial dogs, but move with grace and agility. They are smart, sensitive to their master's mood and wonderful with children and the infirm. They are self assured. If you lucky enough to be called a friend you will be awarded constant companionship. If you are not a friend, well they can give you a stare that would stop a train...

They also are wonderful liars when it comes to their health. Many an owner does not have a clue that anything is seriously wrong with their dog until the end is very near. They live their lives with dignity, always putting their "pack" first. Try to find THAT package in a golden or a collie! (not that I am biased or anything )

Re: Why a Rotty?

We were quite ignorant when we got our pup. We got her from a friend basically a BYB, which now I know enough not to do that again. I found this forum about a year ago and just recently joined. I was a little scared when my husband said he wanted to get a rottweiler, all I had ever heard were horror stories about the breed. Now she's 2 1/2 and I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world, she is the sweetest dog I have ever known, loyal, loving, great with kids, goofy, smart, beautiful and the list could go on and on. With the proper training they are excellent dogs and I will continue to own rottweilers over any other breed in my lifetime.

Re: Why a Rotty?

I have had various breeds of dogs. Loved them all very much. My first Rottie a gift from a back yard breeder. Never have I had such a loyal trusting best friend. Nor a savagly broken heart when he fell apart and died from basicly bad breeding.
My new boy (3 years) is also my best friend loyal beyond belief. I can not imagine my life without a Rottweiler in it.
I walk (run)(play with) 4-8 dogs at a time...Labs, Lab mixes, Bernese mountain dog, Great Danes and Mutts.
All of the dogs run ahead and off in the woods. Not far but they do there own dog thing. All of the dogs except My Rottie boy and my foster girl. They choose to stay by my side.
Nothin like a Rottie!

so very true, many nights I have found myself hanging off the bed.
I became infactuated with the breed years ago. Their loyalty, looks, goofiness, and many more to name, just no time. LOL

Re: Why a Rotty?

rottweilers:

Soulful
Silent strength
Loyal
Intellegent
Thinkers
Respectful
Playful when need be
Serious when need be
Thrive on learning and working
Warriors
Talkers
Keeps you in shape
Makes you learn about dog behaviors and loving every minute of it

With there black ice coat and muscular body structure they are the most magnificent and breathtaking animal there is.

I know someone who does a lot of fostering and she had recently fostered her first Rottweiler. She said this was the best dog she had ever fostered. So I said, do you know why?

She said, Why?

Because she is a Rottweiler.

Re: Why a Rotty?

I started off with a Golden, and she turned out beautifully, but she was an AWFUL puppy and to this day is a space cadet. BLONDE to the bone. Never known one not to be and I train with a dozen of them who are highly trained and all loony (as admitted by their owner/trainers).

Rottweilers are calm, smart, confident, great with kids and other pets when socialized properly. I would not have another breed.

I also have a friend who breeds Collies and, although they are smart, they BARK BARK BARK. Welcome to a true herding breed. No thank you. I like my quiet Rotts.

They are big, they provide me with security just by being there. No protection training needed, they are a deterrent. That is all I want. They are my pets, my loves and wonderful family members who are far more wash and wear than any Golden or Collie I have ever met!

That's why!!!

Kristi
