Unhappy CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

Please follow the link below and submit your dog's samples. I believe this may be for pedigreed animals only, as they pull your dogs' pedigree from the AKC database based on the registration number.

The Grrrlz and Cate's Crunch were entered in the pilot study back in February. Now to get the boyzzz done.

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

I've got this sitting on my desk to send in today for all four of my girls. What an awesome opportunity to be a part of this project!

I do have one question, do you send the $5 for each in with the application or when you get the DNA samples done and send them back? That was not real explainatory to me (or else I just didn't read it right! )

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

Send it in with the samples. They will send you back bar-coded samples that are bar coded to each of your dogs (to make it easier for them to process when you return them).

At the pilot study, they did 3 swabs per dog.

Make sure you also have the health questionnaire printed and completed on each girl. :)

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

Thanks Gretchen, I was definitely having a senior moment trying to figure it out. It's just too simple actually!

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

It is for ALL dogs who are registered (no matter the breed!). Many diseases run across many breeds, and the more samples they have to look at when they're trying to isolate a particular gene for cancer, or HD, or whatever....the better off they'll be.

Ok - I wondered about the breeding aspect as well - thanks for the link

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

It has nothing to do with breeding, but everything to do with tracing heritability. Pedigrees can be pulled with an AKC number (submitted by owner on application).

Unfortunately, rescued dogs have no pedigree info available, nor are they known to be purebred, so a mutation from one part of their mix could show up in the DNA analysis, but not be found in any other Rottweiler (b/c perhaps it came from the black lab part of the dog's genes). This would really throw things off.

Bucky is "full blooded" (LOL) AKC registered - they are welcome to add him to their study.

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

Gretchen and Sharon...did you just do the cheek swabs? Obviously the blood draw would require a vet visit (well, maybe not for Gretchen )
I'll put it on my "to do" list.

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

Gretchen - do you know if the CHIC DNA will then give you an AKC DNA "number"? (Hope you understand what I mean; I am awake when I should be sleeping for my graveyard shift and can't think of the words I want! I know you would understand that problem! VBG!)

Thanks!

Re: CHIC DNA repository -- samples needed!

No, I don't think so. This is simply a collection / storage of the DNA. The AKC DNA program is an actual analysis of the markers (you get a certificate) and costs $40.
