Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Hi there,
May I just say that was a great post.
Could I have permission to use this article in a Rottweiler news letter?
Regards

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Now, THIS is what I call an article.

I also saw, with relief, the AKC reporting that Rottweiler figures have dropped, but still concerned that there is no count on BYB's.

A dog for the connoiseur, the Rotti.

Most certainly. Please just list me as the author (Gretchen Caldwell).

Thanks!

If the dogs are not registered, then truly, there is not really any way to keep track of them. One could try to use town/city dog registrations (which usually entail listing the breed), but not all dog breeds are described acurately, and not all locations require liscensing/registration.

I would, however, be willing to hazard a guess that the BYB's are following a similar trend (downward) as the ethical breeders. I say this b/c I think the market for homes has really slowed down and BYB's usually operate on supply/demand. If the demand drops and they're getting stuck with litter after litter, they'll switch breeds.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Before I got my "rotten" :) puppy I did a LOT of research about the breed and spoke with numerous breeders. Then after she (my puppy) arrived I still searched for more info and found the book "Rottweilers for Dummies". I also purchased "The Ultimate Rottweiler, Second Edition" and found both books to be very helpful. Knowledge is key and Gretchen's sticky post is right on.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Great post. I recommend Rottweilers for Dummies. The first couple of chapters tell you why you should NOT own a Rottweiler. You have to have the patience of a saint and you have do the routine day in and day out while training. Yes, Rotts are aloof. But what great dogs to have if you have the stamina.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

I truly appreciate this posting. I've gotten so tired of hearing people trying to push the breed on someone, only telling them about the good side of owning a Rottweiler. I wish that everyone considering a rottie would have to read this first.
