Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

So Gretchen....when is your book coming out? Really, you need to write one. Once again, another well written post...and definitely worth a sticky.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

This is incredible. I'm certain many people read about the breed and think, "wow, an awesome, strong dog" and rarely break it down like this to consider what it will be like to actually train this breed to become the companion you desire. Great job!

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Great Post,
Every book or article I've read, pretty much says the same thing, although I think that alot of people don't take it seriosly.
This note is to Angel Bunny,
I adopted a dog through your organization, before adopting, I owned a Rottweiler for almost nine years, we lost her after a short illness over the summer, before adopting, I took my youngest daughter and a friend to a Rottweiler day a Petco. It was very informative, and the kids just loved the dog that was there, it was worth the 1 1/2 hour ride, although nobody could have talked me out of another Rotty, to me they are the perfect(almost)dog!

Excellent, to the point and covers everything you need to know before considering a rottweiler.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Nicely written...

I have owned GSD's and Labs in the past and my current Rotty is a new adventure for me. Woe to the ignorant on this breed. I feel like I am always learning something about him.

Thanks for the tips,

Wolfram

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

I said in a recent post "How can anyone not love that about them??" I was thinking about there bad "rep" but you are correct this bread is not for everyone, and you could be right when you said
"and hopefully in the near future, ownership will dwindle down to those who really know and appreciate the Rottweiler and understand the responsibilities of owning one."

Even with the trials I wouldn't want another dog, just like my teenag boys, I still wouldn't trade them for the world.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

Great post...but still rather hard to get the point across to the wanna be's.
I have people asking don't I miss my rotties,(DUH)and why we haven't
got around to getting another one. My husband is rebounding from cancer
and other ailments currently, so we postponed the idea of getting one until
he was up and able to work and train as before. I tell people you always
complimented their actions well it takes efford and work, work and efford.

When we first located here people would bring their male or female to be mated. My hubby use to go up in air over their mistake of asking.
Well now there is less than a hand ful in town now. I got tired of seeing them tied to a tree or fence. Yes, I will be most happy when we can get
another. Plus when the time is right he wants to rescue one also and
get one from a ethical breeder again. So the challenge will be on, he is truly looking forward to getting another rottie ,since it almost 6 months since we lost our Baby Bear. Ya know almost 20 years with one breed, they gotta
be the best.

Again thanks for the wonderful post.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

BostonRott is not going to have to write a book................I've copied so much of what she writes on here, that I can just put the book together for her! Wish I lived close to Boston, I'd like to drop by and spend about a kazillion hours just learning more.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

I loved your post and wish I'd read it before I got Kai four and a half years ago. I think I'd have opted for a toy-something, and rightly so.

Though I've had Kai since she was six weeks old, I'm only just becoming a responsible dog owner. It's a daunting task - Previously I'd been a cat person, so uneducated as I was, I figured a Rott would be a bigger, lickier, more fun kind of feline.

Still, I will rise to be the kind of leader my dog needs me to be. Reading all of the posts here really helps get me started!

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

This is an important thread for everyone to read. I, too, am waiting for Gretchen's book!

There was a beautiful 18 month old male neutered (they all are at the AHS) Rottie on the Arizona Humane Society's weekly TV show today. I surely hope someone who knows Rotties and can make one a well-adjusted member of their family took him home this afternoon. They don't do the detailed screening that a rescue would do, so I hope he gets steered the right way. He was a good looking dog, and other than needing to learn to be an inside dog, had no apparent issues. Good luck, Winston!

Hi, I am a new member and I just must say I really loved this thread. I have wanted a rottweiler for over 10 years but until now i havent had the time or ability to get one but I will hopefully if everything goes as planned get one next spring

No matter how much I have wanted one these years I have understood that I would not have been doing the animal any favors since these dogs require a lot of effort. instead I have tried to educate myself as much as I can about the breed. And I am even more determined today, have just been waiting for the right time to come.

Thank u guys so much for all the info in these forums as I am sure it will be a great help when the time comes.Until then I will just keep on reading.

Re: Why the Rottweiler is NOT for everyone

May I also add, that I am in complete agreement....It's time to write a book!

I do not believe in "accidents"...so when Roman came into my life, God had a purpose in mind! Many a time, the 1st few month's he came home, I would say "I miss my Pittbulls"!!!lol
Roman is strong willed, tested me daily, etc. Everything you would expect an 11 month old Rotty to do! And I now realize that God's intention's were to get ME on track!lol It wasn't Roman who needed training, but it was ME who needed to do the work to understand him and get off my butt and do what it takes to make sure he was happy, secure, trained, etc. At times that meant taking pain meds before a walk and after!lololol

Now that I have Layna & Roman, my life seems complete! They compliment each other AND me! We are a team....Me at the wheel of course, but once you realize the work involved, buckle in and set your course.....It's so worth it! I still look at them at times and say "Man...it would have been so much easier if God would have given me a Pittbull!"hahahaa

Do your research and hire a trainer is the best advice in the world!!!!
